December, 2009
Greetings!

What gift can you give this season that won't become worn out or thrown away?  Most people typically think of something that costs money to buy.  You've no doubt heard the saying that "time is money".  So why don't you give the gift of your time this holiday?  Perhaps your family or friends need help with a project or just someone to talk to.  Toys, electronics, clothes, and the like, all become worn out and thrown away - this year give a gift of yourself.
Volunteering
Many families get energized to provide much needed food and clothing for the less fortunate during this time of year.  There are so many needs in the community all year long that we never even realize.  While searching the internet for local volunteer opportunities, I came across an entry from The Bulletin.  Did you know that the first Sunday of each month, The Bulletin requests submissions for and then prints a lengthy list of volunteer opportunities compiled by the Department of Human Services Volunteer Services?

Visit this link for the entire list for December 2009.  Here are a just a few of the suggestions that don't do a lot of advertising and you might not have heard of them:

Grandma's House: a home for pregnant, abused, or homeless teens needs warm, loving, caring volunteer house moms.

School-to-Career Partnership:  Business Community members needed for high school classroom enrichment, work readiness training, job shadows, field experience and site tours.

Senior Peer Counseling Program : needs volunteers ages 60 + to become resourceful, trained peers to seniors ages 65+ who are experiencing physical or emotional difficulties.

All contact information for these and many others can be found at the link provided above.
