Greetings!
As my Dad's Alzheimer's progressed, I rarely traveled on my own, but whenever I did, that is exactly when he would fall, get seriously injured and I would get the calls from his facility and the emergency rooms. No matter where I was or what I was doing, my attention was focused totally on him and his needs.
All quite fitting as he the story he always shared is that more than fifty years ago now he was in a car dealership about to purchase the car of his dreams when the salesman told him that his wife was on the phone. It seems that the adoption agency had called and the baby they had been waiting for was now waiting for them.
Needless to say, my parents picked me up, and 18-months later my brother, in their old well-worn station wagon. Thus began my Dad's life of focusing on what was most important instead of "stuff".
My dad passed away two weeks ago and was buried last week in a military service. The month of March was filled emergency room visits, two hospital stays and in the end, two weeks of hospice support in his Alzhiemer's Facility.
Throughout his last month, he was surrounded by the "stuff" that he had accumulated in his life - the love of his daughter, his son, his two grandsons and the caregivers who had grown to know and love him as well. He died peacefully on March 23rd. It is the stuff that we choose to prioritize that defines the legacy that we create ...

The Right Stuff: Life, Leadership and Legacy!
Our lives, leadership and legacies reflect what we choose to prioritize in the key moments we face.
We all know and might even love people who prioritize and seek happiness in the accumulation of possessions like expensive cars, houses, shoes, clothes, jewelry, toys and the list can go on and on. When we feel that there is something missing in our lives, one of the easiest ways to try to fill this void is buy accumulating more stuff. While easy, it doesnt work.
While "stuff" might give us a temporary boost, it does address the underlying void that is driving our lack of happiness or satifaction in our life. To the extreme, most of us had at least heard if not seen some of the painful stories about hoarders compelled to bury their unhappiness or lack of fulfillment under piles and piles of stuff only to be more and more miserable. So what does the current happiness science say will impact the amount of happiness and truly enrich our lives? Here is the list of the top five factors!
- Partnering well is number one on the list! Who we choose to be in relationship with has the biggest impact on our happiness. And their level of happiness is a big piece of that.
- Focus on altruistic and family goals versus career or self-focused goals. People are also happier when their partners prioritized family goals as well.
- Spirituality: People who consider themselves spiritual and those who go to church more often were happier due to the sense of being part of something bigger than themselves.
- Work, but not too much or too little: People's happiness matched how well they felt their work hours matched their desired work hours. People who worked more or fewer hours than they preferred were less happy.
- Social interaction and a sense of belonging is also one of the keys to happiness.
How does this relate to the stuff of our Leadership?
When we or others feel that there is something missing or lacking in our leadership, there is a tendancy in leadership development today to amass stuff as well. Compentency models, tools, processes, multiple assessments, typing, roles, how to's and books on top of books. What is the impact of piling all of that stuff on our leaders and our leadership?
It can make leadership just as unfulfilling as life of amassing
possessions. "Stuff" can clutter, bury and distract us from what is most important to our leadership and our ability to be great. A getting back to basics approach is one of the most powerful leadership development effort you can make to enhance your leadership effectiveness today. In parallel with the above list, the right stuff of leadership looks like this:
- Partnering well. And being a good partner for others.
- Focus on altruistic and organization goals versus career or self-focused goals.
- Spirit: The sense of being part of something bigger than you.
- Work, but not too much or too little.
- Get social. Afterall, relationships are the real work of work.
Getting back to these five leadership basics instead of trying to work through all of the leadership stuff will enable the great leader within you to shine through!
