There are two seldom discussed victims of the Great Recession that are key to organizational success - workplace trust and ethics.
According to a recent survey published by Deloitte LLC nearly half of all who plan to look for a new job this year cite loss of trust in their employer over the few years as a reason for leaving. Nearly as many say a lack of transparent leadership communication will drive them to look for greener, more open and honest pastures. While trust and credibility must be built on the example set by top management, that is not enough. The reality is that leaders have 50-70% influence over the climate of their team and for some leaders, those either at the very positive or the very negative ends of the scale, that influence can be as strong as 90%. So how does a leader lead in such a way as to engender trust in those around him or her? Through "Revealutionary" Leadership! "Revealutionary" Leadership is a way of leading that is grounded in who you really are and enables you to connect with your great leader within. It begins with getting very clear about your core values, that which is most important to you, your unique gifts, strengths and the fierce resolve to live up to your full potential by playing "real" which is the only way to really play "big". "Revealutionary" Leadership acknowledges that being a leader is not a role, but rather a way of being and when you are being "real", then you have access to you at your best. Only when you step out of the "role" and into the "real" that can you access the great leader that lies within and achieve your peak performance. Its getting yourself in alignment with your core so your strengths and wisdom can fully flow. How do you know if you have fallen into "role" play versus "real" play? Supporting you to figuring this out is one the very first key steps to high performance in the SOAR to Success program and is actually one of the outcomes of the very first session. The results of "role play" versus "real play" include a lack of fulfillment or a sense that you are not doing your important or purposeful work, disengagement as the work feels flat versus highly energizing and it results in the "imposter syndrome" where fear or feeling that we are not ______ enough (good, smart, strong, capable, experienced, etc.) to be a star performer or to reach bold goals. It results in playing smaller, working without passion, not taking risks and thereby greatly reducing results, influence, impact and trust and credibility. Leaders who do not play "real" do not earn the trust of the people around them. The lack of full authenticity is always sensed by others and gets in the way. Organizations can inadvertently promote "role play" and therefore significantly lower organization performance by continually promoting or rewarding the same "type" or profile of leader or when they do not go out of their way to evidence the value of and encouragement of diversity of all types and specifically in their senior teams or when they focus on developing a single leader model. When organizations encourage its leaders either through words or actions the kind of leader they must be instead of supporting them to develop their most powerful personal great leadership from within, then they are promoting role play. Role play can only get an organization so far. At some point the leaders will either disengage or move to an organization that they feel values them for who they really are and what they really can bring. That is not to say that organizations should not have key leadership attributes that they seek in their leaders! On the contrary, knowing what is needed for the mission is critical. Where the benefits are lost is when the organization tells the leaders that there is only one way to do or be those attributes instead of respecting their "real" way. One very quick way for you to assess if your current plan is keeping you small versus enabling you to reach your peak performance is to answer the following question: "Is who you are as a leader at work different in any way than who you are as you lead your life?" If on any level you find yourself answering "yes" to this question, then your great career is waiting for you in your Leader Revealution!
