Greetings!
This Friday, my son heads back to school! For me, that is the official moment when summer ends! When asked what he loves most, he will simply reply "summer break". What he won't say is that he did not get to have one until he was 10 years old.
While I was working in corporate, his summers felt very much like the rest of his year: getting up at 6:30 and heading out to spend all day at "school" till being picked up at 6 PM. The fact that he did camp things instead of school work during his ten hour day, did not change his perspective on the time very much or the fact that he was constantly in a structured environment.
I am just beginning to now understand how this has informed his expectations for himself and for those around him. It brings me to a situation that I have also seen play out in the work place time and time again!
Does this feel familiar to you too? |
The Right Fit!
I have not understood my son's attraction to the discipline of the military. That is until now.
From his earliest years, he has been and remained a steadfast "contrarian" - if we said "right", he would go "left"; we say "Cubs", he says "Sox". Being part of a culture as disciplined and rules-based as the military just does not fit with whom I know him to be. And that is how, I recently realized, I was looking at it all wrong!
Picking him up from the summer camp of his choosing, a week long military camp, the conversation went something like this:
Me: So, how was it?
Him: Not as good as last year. It was not military enough. There was not enough discipline and everyone in our platoon was goofing around. It was like just a summer camp, not a military camp like last year.
Me: Does that mean it was more fun than than last year? (Clearly expressing my paradigm!)
Him: Mom, how can you can fun with a bunch of kids running around with no discipline?
And that's when I finally got it.
His desire for discipline is not about him. His desire is to be in a culture with structure that disciplines how everyone else behaves! Just like all of his summer camp and small-classroomed school experience! He plays well and connects with others who behave and play like him.
Hmm, where have I seen this before? |
Culture Fit, Flex or Flee!
Me: How are you enjoying your new job?
Leader: I might have made a mistake coming here. I am not so sure that this is my "tribe". It might not be the right "fit" for me.
A "bad culture fit" is the number one reason cited for early hiring failures. Just like my son, we all tend to feel more comfortable in a culture that fits what we are used to. Given that, how can we be sure that we are not just looking to stay inside our comfort zone?
What is the value to us in flexing ourselves to fit into more? When it comes to culture, how do we know when we should Fit, Flex or Flee?
When you should seek to "Fit" a culture is when it is one in which your feel clearly that you belong. There is strong overlap between the values of the organization and your own, it clearly leverages
and appreciates your strengths and provides you with a sense of positive contribution to something bigger than yourself and a level of joy in doing it.
You should seek to "Flex" when the culture is one that challenges you to grow in areas currently outside your comfort zone thereby enhancing all that you bring to the table. For example, if you come from a culture that is very results-focused into one that is more relationship-focused, you will have the opportunity to Flex your relationship building muscles as an add to the results-based skills honed in the prior culture.
Still key in a "Flex" culture situation is a strong overlap between the organization's core values and principles and your own. With that as a foundation, "discomforts" can be great opportunities for personal growth. Leaders who have been successful in mutliple cultures are therefore typically very marketable.
"Flee" is the right answer when serious conflicts or differences exist between your and the organization's core values to the point where "fitting" or "flexing" breaches your sense of integrity. "Fleeing" because it is an uncomfortable fit when there is value alignment without trying to "flex" and expand your comfort zone might be a significant lost opportunity for your personal growth.
In tomorrow's Your Corporate Success teleworkshop we will be exploring this topic in more depth PLUS I will be introducing the "10 Key Culture Fit Factors" critical to your career success and to the success of those who work for you and all you coach!
