Greetings!
Commencements are happening all around us! Grade schools, high schools, colleges, nursing schools, graduate schools and even kindergartens are ceremoniously marking "completions" and welcoming new beginnings.
With all of this in the air, these are some of the conversations that I have been having in the last two weeks... |
Life's Commencement Moments!
In the past two weeks, I have had all of the following conversations...
A conversation with my nephew newly graduated from college and struggling between his ideals and his perception that they must be "shelved" as he enters the "real world".
A conversation with someone in transition who believes that neither ethical leaders nor ethical organizations exist in today's tough market and is considering "fudging" his resume.
A conversation with someone contemplating using his limited budget to grow as a coach by investing in clever marketing tools instead of investing in his core coaching skills.
A conversation with someone struggling with the very fine line between honoring someone's memory versus using it to forward one's own agenda.
A conversation with someone who bears much witness and evidence of profound unethical behavior inside her organization and must choose between "fight" or "flight".
A conversation with someone who witnessed what they perceived to be inappropriate touching by an adult of a young teen.
A conversation with my son about his team's choice to honor the memory of his 14-year-old team mate and not glorifying suicide.
A conversation with someone finalizing the critical details of a hard-earned promotion that will take her far from home, hearth and husband.
A conversation with someone wanting to honor her passion and talent for art versus just searching for the next corporate job.
A conversation with someone about his readiness to stop playing small and take a risk with his boss.
A conversation with someone about leaving their therapist who clearly crossed the line of a quality professional with or without filing a formal complaint.
Commencements are clearly in the air...
Before we each entered the real world, most likely we too had youthful ideals. Unfortunately, my nephew's perception that they must be "shelved" could not be more common or more wrong!
Only in the real world do our ideals have a chance to become our
reality. Having ideals does not create any impact or difference in the world. What does is having the courage to honor them when the real world tests both them and us. When we choose to honor them, we are Commencing to be the change that we want to see more of in the world.
These tests, these moments when we get to choose to honor that which is most important to us or not are life's big Commencement moments! Without caps, gowns or pomp or the "Ode to Joy", it is in these moments that define us. These are the moments in which we can "graduate" from simply having aspirations to being inspirational!
It is only through our choosing to honor our ideals that we get to live a life with purpose and meaning. Doing anything less is fodder for a long list of regrets. It is in these Commencement moments that you will decide if you will take a stand for what is right for all even perhaps at the expense of what is "good" or easier for you.
And in these moments, there are only two possible choices:
1) The one that you will feel good about no matter the cost
or
2) The one that you will feel bad about no matter the gain
In the short-term, which you choose in your next Commencement moment, no matter how big or small it might seem, defines you.
In the long view, what you did with all of these moments
accumulates as your legacy and the amount of difference you chose to make while you were here.
May your legacy fully eclipse the loftiest ideals of your youth... |

And sometimes our biggest Commencement is the fight for our life...
Still in the fight for his life, my nephew Craig's is an inspiration to me and to all who know him! At a site that was put together by a friend of his, you can get to know him a bit through pictures, a collection of his original music and by continuing to send your thoughts, prayers and support his way!

Wishing you the courage to always do the right thing, your great life and your great work!
Happy Summertime!
Sincerely,
Ann
