The Signs of Spring!

The signs of spring are all around us!  The flowers are blooming, trees are budded and the grass has greened!  And for us, the urge to clean, purge and de-clutter can also be a very real sign of this season.  But what if it is actually a sign of something else?

Unless you can no longer see the floor of your closet, the top of your desk or are unable to put your hands on anything when you need it, chances are that spring urge you have to de-clutter or to organize probably has surprising little to do with your home or your "stuff".

Clutter is "noise"!  Clearing it gives us the space and the silence to gain the clarity to see what is really wanting to happen.  When the urge to de-clutter or organize is really strong, consider the following possibilities:

The Need to Create Control
Sometimes the need to purge or organize is the result of needing to feel that you are in more control of some or all aspects of your life.  Or at least to be able to create the impression that you are.  This is common when we are feeling overwhelm or overwork or when our life expands or grows larger.

The more we need to "be in control" in our lives, the smaller and "tighter" we must make or keep our lives.  Whether it is the birth of a child, a new relationship or a new job, with each experience of growth in responsibility and scope, we must also grow and
expand.  This includes learning to let go of what does not really matter, focusing on what does and creating the space for the wisdom to know the difference.  Learning to let go and to lean into other people in your life and work is the key - and it is as much a gift to them as it is to you!

The Need to Create Space
Sometimes the need to purge and de-clutter comes directly from the need to make space for what is wanting to come.  You can tell the difference between the need to make space and the need for more control as the latter comes with the need to "organize" stuff and the former is more about "pitching" it!  In this case, your "stuff" is a metaphor for the noise that is getting in the way of you being able to see or get clear about what you need now.

While it might be easier to stay busy in the pitching and the purging, under this urge is the need to be silent and still so that we can gain clarity about what or who we are wanting to become.  Busyness and multi-tasking keep us in our mental clutter, old behaviors and patterns about what we need and who we are.  Your personal empowerment to be all that you are meant to be requires you to be intentional about making a daily  practice of making the space to be able to access your wisdom.  Start creating that space beginning today and see what shows up.

The Need to Create New
When the need to de-clutter comes with a strong sense of urgency, panic or pain, it is the need to create new.  This is most often accompanied by the realization, conscious or subconscious, that parts of your life or career are no longer serving you or something has happened that results in the need for dramatic change.

Unlike the feeling of wanting to create space, the need to create new comes with the strong need and desire for a "do-over"!  It is less about making space for something more or next and much more about getting away from what we know is not serving or good for us. The call to start over requires you to gain the same amount of clarity about what is happening as well as the additional need to recognize and act with the appropriate level of urgency required for the situation.

The Need to Re-New
The need to re-new is by far the most common need driving the spring cleaning ritual.  Its origins can be seasonal, trendy, growth-based or the ability to finally let the outside in after a long cold winter.  There is nothing like a good spring cleaning or a fresh coat of paint to re-new the energy of our space!   Be sure to include the rituals that re-new your energy as well like a new look, getting outside, a new hobby, or just making time to enjoy the ones that you already have!
