"...a coach...a valuable sounding board in today's crazy business climate."
"...increasingly, individuals are turning to coaches for help with every sort of problem(and opportunity)."

"The objective, distanced view of a coach can also lead to new ways of looking at issues because the coach's ideas are not limited by politics or a position within the company."

Greetings!
In most years, the launch of a new year is a time to reflect on the year gone by and create intentions for the one to come. This year holds even more significance as we also mark the passing and the launching of a new decade.
At this point in my life, it feels like the decades pass as quickly as did just the years in my youth. When I look back on the last and ahead to the next, these decades will be the most poignant in my life and perhaps in yours as well.
Given that, when is it time to really commit to creating our best life and biggest impact?
Read on to learn why "Now" is "When" in 2010... |
"Now" is "When" in 2010!
This is my mantra for the new year!
During the last decade, I lost my mother, a best friend, several dear colleagues and extended family members all of whom assumed they had plenty of time to be all that they hoped to be. Over the same time my Dad began his battle with Alzheimer's, my son, his adolescence and me, my own business to be able to be there more fully for both of them. Cherished relationships with family and friends grew stronger including the gift of finding my birthfamily.
It has clearly been a decade of significant comings, goings and growings for me and I am sure for you as well. Through it all, the past 10 years have been the richest in love, personal growth and impact. And there is much more that I want to be and do! At this point in my life, the list is longer than I knew it could possibly be in my younger years.
Gone are the days when we look to others to solve the issues or to be the change. I can clearly recall our welcoming in the year 2000 with our generators "at ready" while the question in the air was "what have they done about it" (Y2K). I contrast that with the sentiment we heard everywhere in D.C. during President Obama's Inauguration week.
It was not "what is he going to do about it" but rather "what are we". The "it" in this case are the legacies of decades gone by: global warming, violence, war, terrorism and the loss of faith and trust in some of our key institutions like banking and big business. As I look ahead to this new decade and wonder what will be the legacies we will leave to the next, I clearly get that "we" means "me".
As I define my personal picture of success and impact, the speed at which the time now pass reminds me that procrastination is quite presumptuous. The only time I know I have is "now". I also know to make the most of my "now" there are certain habits that have gotten me to where and who I am, that I must change to get to be where and who I now want to be.
Out with the Old and In with the New! 5 New Year
resolutions:
Old Habit: Be in service to others. New Habit: Increase my capacity to be in service to others by taking good care of me.
Old Habit: Work must be done before I can play. New Habit: Make time to play and make work play for work is never done.
Old Habit: Focus within the limits of my power & influence. New Habit: Know that my power and influence is limited only by me.
Old Habit: Be in every moment. New Habit: Live in every moment.
Old Habit: Maintain a balance between life and work. New Habit: Define the life I want and back my work into it.
Commitment to these new habits begins when?
"Now" is "When" in 2010!

Today's Leader Challenge!
In a decade that began with Enron and ended with the biggest business bailouts in history as well as the Great Recession, much was lost and gained in the past decade on the business front as well.
In a recent poll, trust in business and corporations ranked even lower than that for banks and brokers even with the Lehman Brothers and Madoff events. Employee morale and engagement are at the lowest levels ever. More than 60% of senior leaders polled last month stated that they intend to look for new opportunities as soon as the economy improves.
We could make up that this is a crisis caused by and waiting for CEO's to solve, but we also know that the biggest factor in both engagement and retention is one's direct manager. For that very reason, the truth is that each of us holds a piece of the solution. And the solution that the experts are calling for is a "back to basics" approach to leadership. They define the basics as integrity, trust, and credibility. This kind of leadership is built on authenticity and value creation.
The leadership evolution over our recent history has been
described as starting in the mid-80's with the "leader as hero" model where the strength and wisdom of the individual was key i.e., Jack Welch of GE. Then came Enron, Tyco and others and what was called for then was a spreading of the power and "leader as collaborator" was key. In that era, a good leader needed the ability to create a strong and capable team and as well as the soft skills that it takes to optimize team performance.
Today, on the heals of much financial and business demise, this "back to basics" approach is coming from all fronts. Lifestyles, home styles and even decorating trends have swung to a
minimalistic return to honoring that which is most valued and important. And it is true about leadership now as well.
Today what is needed is leaders with authentic presence who know and appreciate that leadership is not a role but an honorable way of being. At the core of great leadership is authenticity and at the core of that, is values. Authenticity enables a strong brand and a consistent brand leads to Credibility. Credibility is the attribute that ranks the highest as people assess leadership capability. (QE "Presence Progression" Model). The first step to being a good leader is to get very clear about what your core values are and to create your leader stance consistent with them.
These two steps are the exercises and the focus of the first in the six-part TeleWorkshop Series "SOAR to Success" and is now available via MP3 recording when you register for the program at the following link:
