Greetings!
"It was the best of times; it was the worst of times...". That is how Dickens launched his classic, "A Tale of Two Cities" and that is how I would describe my last few months! And as I count my blessings heading into this holiday season, I count both the good and the bad!
I launched this year with the challenge to "Shine in 2009"! Entering January. I had little appreciation for the size of the dips and the peaks that this year would bring for many of us. Our ability to "shine", especially through the tough times, gives light not only to our lives but to the lives of those around us.

2009: Rough Seas!
As I finally get the chance to sit and write to you, I recall the big, framed print that hung prominently on the wall in
my offices the latter half of my career, a gift from one of my teams. It was the picture of a ship in the midst of very rough seas with the caption "Anyone can be captain when the sea is calm".
For many, 2009 has had its share of rough seas. Seas churned by the recession, unemployment, survivor stress and the pressure for results despite it all. And that is just on the career front. Add to this, that many are also managing through health crisis: theirs, their children's, their spouse's, their parents'. And beneath the surface of what can be seen, even more struggle with self-doubts and fears as they face much change. Tossed by wave after wave of challenge and adversity, great strength is required to even remain where we are, never mind move forward.
And yet, through all of this, leaders continue to lead, we do continue to move forward and incredible, creative wins and gains have been made. Every new storm weathered only serves to further our resolve and strengthen our resilience. In the face of great adversity, comes great clarity. Clarity of intent, of purpose and of what matters most.
As we steer through high tides, tidal waves and the occasional tsunami, we are all made even more aware of what anchors us. Our core values. Weathering rough seas requires the commitment and courage to set (vision) and chart (strategy) our true course. Remaining at the helm in the midst of it all, requires a clear leader stance.
And as the seas get their roughest, like a beacon from the shore, comes the deep knowing that there is very, very little that matters very, very much.
It is in those moments, and the steps we take from there, that we all get a glimpse of the great leader in each of us, brightly shining through...

Thanksgiving is always a pivotal point in the year for me. It is when I look back on the current year, in gratitude and for growth and then begin to plan forward to the next year!
As an introverted thinker, I basically "bake" my next year plans throughout the first few weeks of December while readying for the holidays. My plan clear by Christmas, I put all thoughts of the future aside and focus on being in the holiday moments with family and friends. Come the first week of the new year, I am fully engaged in my new year strategy!
And thus it flows for me year after year. This cycle of gratitude, growth, celebration, vision and strategy.

In support of my personal growth, it included suggestions of careers that would most leverage my strengths, the ways I will be misunderstood, and the ways I might get in my own way!
