Maybe its a function of living in Chicago, or of loving our boating time or of so enjoying having my son home, or perhaps a combination of all of the above, but it seems to me that summer goes by at least ten times faster than any other season. So fast that I can actually feel it moving, slipping away - the days, weeks and months gone in the flash of a lightning bug. And then I had to stumble upon the following quote:
"Improve each moment as it flies!
Life is a short summer." Samuel Johnson
Wow! "Life is a short summer"! In the midst of my final countdown of summertimes days and hours, this is the last thing that I wanted to acknowledge!
And yet, all we have to do is look at our children to see how fast life flies! Or to our careers and the years of experience accumulated, or to our relationships, the anniversaries celebrated. How can time have flown by so very fast? And how can we be sure that we make the very most of our "short summer"?
The lead character in one of my son's summer reading books, Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine, tried to make the most of his summer by making a list: The things done every summer, The things done for the first time, The Discoveries and The Revelations. Amongst the latter were things such as the first discovery that your parents don't know everything in the world - I can still remember that one!
What would your list include? What are the rituals that are a key part of your life? How long is your list of your firsts? What "firsts" are yet to be inked? What discoveries have you made along the way that helped to define the life that you have created? What revelations or "aha's" have you had that enabled you to become the person that you are today?
While it may be true that we cannot slow the passing of time, we are certainly in control of how well we fully savor every moment. Pick up a pen, grab some paper and begin your "short summer" list now.
Know that our "short summer" tends to pick up speed as it moves along. Since we cannot slow time down, we must savor it! Since we cannot slow it down, we also must live our dreams. If you are thinking about or wanting to do something, just do it!
For life is not just short, it truly is just "a short summer"
