60 Seconds to Your Success!
When Wisdom Calls!
Something in his gut told him to keep an eye on that boat. Something told him to reply "not yet" when the kids asked to start their ceremonious jumping off of the side of the boat. While all of the rest of the boatload of family and friends were settling into to their "best view" seats after anchoring in the perfect spot on Lake Michigan to watch the Chicago Air and Water Show this past weekend, our captain was not settled.
Instead, he was up front towards the bow, listening to his gut, leery of the behavior of an approaching boat. "You are getting too close! You are going to take my anchor!" He shouted at the captain of the other boat. That captain shouted back much, but nothing repeatable here.
Unfortunately, our captain's gut was right. That boat proceeded to go over and hook our anchor line with it's propeller. In an instant there were three adults at the front of each boat working hard to keep the boats off each other to minimize the damage. The different behaviors of the two boat captains of these similar-in-size boats in an urgent and dangerous situation was striking.
The second captain was leaning so hard against his cabin window that the glass gave and a huge, pointed glass chard was sitting directly behind and under his legs. Our captain cooly, calmly went below and using a knife that he had purchased just for such a situation, cut the anchor line thus releasing both our anchor and our boat from the other. Neither our boat or any one on it sustained injury. Neither statement true for the other.
One boat was named "Crazy Times" and the other "Namaste". What made the ensuing ten minutes so poignant was the way each of the boat captains so fully personified the given names of their boats. So while I thought to give our boat a name that must be explained to most, it was my husband who showed everyone exactly what "Namaste" looks like.
