Greetings!
For my July TeleClass, part of my Your Corporate Success member-based Executive Coaching Program, I created a Mid-year Check-in for my members. In order to achieve the success they seek, it's important to take note of what is working well and what is not. The first thing I noticed as they began to share their progress to-date was a slow but consistant dance around the word "success". What is success? How do we know when we have achieved it?
Take the following Quantum Success test... |
3 Ways to Test For Success!
Which is the more relevant measure of success for you - the one based on society's standards or on your own? External validation of one's success can be both flattering and fleeting. The more lasting and powerful test comes from within. Only within is known the effort versus the haste, the results versus the intent and the peace versus the price that was paid to create an outcome, a lifetime, a legacy.
Society's success metrics are generic, one-size-fits-all and measure only what is visible: money, wealth, power, status. Internal success metrics are unique and personal, deeply rooted in our individual core values. Only you can define what success is to you. Given that, how might you measure it?
Test #1: How do you feel?
"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." Orison Swett Marden
Do you have a sense of satisfaction, peace, joy, a deep knowing that you have done well in your moments, days and decades to make a difference in your life and the lives of others? Success can feel like a warmth or a fullness that begins deep in your heart and radiates out. It can be the feeling of being in flow with your gifts and your authentic-self honoring that which is most important to you. It can be the feeling of resonance or oneness with your world, your relationships and your passions.
Test # 2: How do you "do"?
"Seventy percent of success in life is showing up."
Woody Allen
What percent of the time are you living outside of your comfort zone? Or how often are you playing it both safe and small in avoidance of fear or pain or hard? Do you give that which is most important to you your all or do your choose to hold back? How well do you "do" with focus, purpose, effort and intention? Fully "showing up" to life's challenges, society's needs and to all that you are meant to do based on the gifts that you have been given, is another internal test of your success.
Test #3: How do you "be"?
"Success is not so much what we have as it is what we are." Jim Rohn
With all that you "do", who is it that you are becoming? I remember a quote by Albert Einstein that said "Strive not to be a man of success but rather a man of value." Is it truly possible for us to even separate these two concepts in our internal measures? Who you "be" is the energy and the character that you contribute to wherever you show up. Who you are becoming is the manifestation of your commitment to always contribute more.
There is a belief in business that you get what you measure. My wish for your Quantum Success is that you start measuring how you "feel", "do" and "be" so that you get all the success that is meant for you in your lifetime - others are counting on you for it! |

A Mother's Success!
For at least half of his thirteen years, my son has expressed a strong passion for the military. Due to my wardrobe of peace signs, he calls me a "hippie". While I spent my childhood and them some as a "pleaser", he does not possess a single "pleaser" bone in his now-taller-than-me body and has always been a proud "contrarian". He has also been consistently clear about his intent to enjoy life and not work as hard as his "just don't get it" parents.
At the suggestion of one of my many wise clients, I offered to send my son to military camp this summer. found a great 10 day program in a nearby state and
watched as he counted down the weeks till it was time to go. Of course, my goal was to give him a taste of the physical and mental hard work and discipline. I foresaw two possible outcomes: 1) that he would love it and 2) the most likely in my mind, that he would hate it and would therefore move closer to my "hippie" views.
What I never saw coming, but my husband says he clearly did, was outcome #3 - that he would hate all of the physical and mental hard work and discipline AND would be more resolved than ever to attend a military high school with sights on a military career.
Sometimes success is tricky. My goal was for my son and I to become more aligned on the vision of his future. That success came in a way that I never saw coming. The third outcome was the only possible way that he could have moved me closer to his.
Based on his experience at camp, he said that he wants to be a leader and evidenced over the course of 10 very tough days, that he is willing to do whatever hard work it takes to be a good one.
Perhaps he is not such a contrarian after all...
