 Greetings!

The last week in June, Chicago hosted the annual conference for the National Association of Women Business Owners. This event is a big deal as women business owners represent the largest business growth segment.   I was very surprised that while the business world is focused on understanding the first chapter of the New Economy, the key themes of the key note speakers, Suzy Welch and Peter Walsh, were the value of knowing  1) your core values and  2) how you might be getting in your own way.

It struck me as I listened that as a member of this community, you already know the significance of both.  And so as last month's e-Zine marked it's third year, I want to express my gratitude to you for being a part of my readership as together we have focused on your best life and career - many of you from the very first issue!

This month we will explore the first chapter of the impending economic change as I welcome your wisdom and insights to the question:

What are the keys to thriving in the New Economy?

3 Keys to Thrive in the New Economy!

It is the consensus of the experts that recovery from the current economic recession will not mean a return to how things were but rather to the advent of a whole New Economy.  Companies and leaders who learn what it takes to succeed in this new business landscape will be the winners.  What are the differences that we can expect and what will it take to thrive, not just survive, will be the focus of my July e-Zines.

What can we expect?  The First Chapter

Let's start by focusing on some of the more strategic elements of the New Economy.  After almost a full year in crisis mode, it is critical that we not only look forward strategically, but that we re-look at existing strategies to make sure that they reflect the changes required.  Key trends were identified in a McKinsey & Company study.  Three with significant implications are:

1) A Continued drop in trust in business

Polls point to yet another significant drop in the amount of trust in businesses, especially in large corporations.  It scores even lower than trust in banks - despite the financial meltdown.  This creates risk of increased regulation and controls like Sarbanes-Oxley after the 2000 downturn and the deterioration of the value of brands.  This could  play out in the first chapter in market share losses, pricing & margin pressure, and significant employee retention issues.  Once the economy ticks up, businesses who do not adjust their strategies to address this will be on the losing side of stakeholder choice as loyalty becomes a thing of the past.

Regaining trust requires that strategies reflect growth in stakeholder, not just shareholder, confidence.  CEO's and their teams must learn to focus on total Stakeholder Value which includes employees, customers, suppliers, communities, society and government.  A great example of this is the power of "Green" which is attracting both consumers and the best talent.

2) A Bigger Role for Government

Government has a significant role in the new chapter.  Consider the stimulus packages, bailouts and prop-ups that will be followed inevitably by regulatory reforms.  Government is engaging in discussions and decision making that was once left to senior management and boards.  Strategies need to include engagement in both the shaping of the reforms and targeted participation in the spending that results from all of this.  As the deficit continues to rise and the populations continue to age, there will be the need for new economical solutions
between governments and businesses to best serve both public and private needs.

3) A Shift in Buying Patterns

With baby-boomers reaching retirement age, and the impact that the recession has had on household savings, the U.S. will no longer be the big global consumer.  This places even more emphasis on the strength of your global sales, service and manufacturing strategies.  Other strategic adjustments needed include protecting your market share and finding ways to capitalize on the older consumer and the tighter household budgets by serving their unique needs and desires creatively.

Another First Chapter -
July 8th Edition

Last year, I spent the 4th of July holiday with my family in Boston immersed in the places and the history of the first chapter of the birth of our country's independence.  This year, we spent the holiday learning about another first chapter.

JoAnne called and said "you just have to call this woman.  She is the nicest, warmest, gentlest woman with whom I have ever spoken.  In fact, I told her she could expect your call tomorrow afternoon."

And so I did.  I found her to be all that JoAnne had said and more.  She was nice and genuine; warm and compassionate, gentle and courageous.  We spoke for 14 and a half minutes about only very important things.

She said to call her any time I have a question or I just want to talk.  I said I would write and send her some pictures.  She said she was very happy that I had called.

Adoptees consider their adoption the start of the second chapter in their life.  This holiday, I received the gift of my first chapter by finding my birthmother.
Thank you to JoAnne and Marlene of The Adoption Database for their tireless efforts in this very tough search!
