Tip #2: e-Motions!
Every day many of us find ourselves wasting time and energy on e-Motions! What's an e-Motion? It's my term for what can and often does go wrong when we use electronic communication in place of the real thing!
Relationships are the real work of work and emotions are their currency. When we use e-communication, the reader actually has to make up the emotion that is behind it. Without the benefit of body language, voice intonation or a simple facial expression often we make it up wrong. Many an e-war has been set off by a mis-read of what someone was feeling or was trying to say in between the lines.
To effectively communicate, we need to send and receive both data and emotion. Every bit of energy, time and emotion that is invested in cleaning up e-Motion misunderstandings is avoidable waste! So the next time you have something to say, pick up the phone or walk to your colleague's desk. Make your communications in person or via the phone as much as possible and watch your relationships and influence grow.
While it started out as a tool to streamline our efforts, electronic communication can be very in-e-fficent indeed!
