 Greetings!

It has been quite a traumatic week at our house.  The smallest member of our family, King, required immediate surgery.  It seems that earlier in the week, he launched a bad behavior - eating plastic. He is all healed now, the trauma is over and yet as my son and I were getting ready to leave for school Friday morning, there King was -eating a plastic pen!

King

3 Warning Signs!

Just days before the initial incident, we had "transitioned out" King's buddy. Our big dog, Sophie, is now living in southern CA desert with my brother and sister-in-law.  Being "let go" was actually a gift to her as she is now free to enjoy her passions without the danger of suburban traffic.  At the same time, with the big dog gone, I put "little" King on small dog food portions thereby introducing him to scarcity and cutbacks.  With the letting-go and cutbacks, who could be blamed for some bad behavior?

Actually, I am to blame.  As King's day-to-day manager, it was my responsibility to be proactive and anticipate his needs given these significant changes in his environment.

And while I doubt you have to keep vigil to ensure your employees are not eating the plastic pens, at least not literally, here are three key warning signs of survivor stress not to be ignored: depression, fatigue and new "bad behavior".  Left unaddressed, survivor stress can result in higher absenteeism, turnover and increased health problems.

So what to do? The key is to nurture employees through open communication starting from the top.  The executive team needs to communicate directly and frequently with employees at all levels.  If not in person, though clearly best, at a minimum through internal web sites, memos and in communications to the entire management team. This sets the tone for all managers to understand and create the open dialogue needed with their organizations and teams.

The messaging needs to be clear, believable, not sugar-coated, and include the profit situation, potential further actions and the critical role that everyone needs to play going forward.  Research shows that employee's also have a high need to know that the process by which individuals where selected to be let go was fair.  It is very difficult for them to come to terms with the situation without that understanding and supporting your employees to come to terms with the situation is exactly what you need to do.

Yesterday, as King and I were at the vets to for his suture removal, another women and her dog were checking in. It seems that her dog had eaten more than its fair share of garden rocks.  The need for widespread manager training in this economy is doggedly apparent...

April 27th edition - The Secret of 1 of the Happiest People

Resilience - May 4th Edition

"Resilience". This word was introduced by one of my clients in our Group TeleCoaching call last week.  The strength and the power of it resonated with several on the call.

"Resilient people demonstrate flexibility, durability, an attitude of optimism and a mindset that is open to learning." per Mary Lynn Pulley and Michael Wakefields, authors of "Building Resiliency: How to Thrive in Times of Change".

In the face of change and stressful times, resiliency gives us the ability to view both negative and positive happenings as opportunity.  It enables us to grow and develop from whatever shows up in our life.  It give us the perspective needed to use "what is" to get closer to what can be - our best lives and biggest impact.

The steps to growing our resiliency are: 1) accept change 2) focus on learning 3) find our sense of purpose and 4) reframe our skillsets as new solutions to the new situations.

Your Success Step: In which of these four steps do you get hung up? How can you get better at this?
