Getting patients admitted from the Emergency Department (ED) to a bed on the units as quickly as possible is a top priority at The Scarborough Hospital, and it shows in the numbers. In fact, it will take less time to get you to a bed than at most other hospitals in the province. In Ontario, it takes on average 30 hours to get patients from the ED to an inpatient bed. At TSH's General campus, it takes an average of 26.4 hours, and the Birchmount campus is right at the 30 hour provincial average.
"It's important to get patients up to the unit when they are admitted," says Denise Edman, Patient Care Manager, Emergency and Urgent Care. "In the Emergency Department, our expertise is in dealing with emergencies. Admitted patients need the expertise of the staff on the inpatient unit. It's all about getting our patients to the right place, with the right care by the right professional."

Sorina Oprea's 91-year-old father was recently rushed to the Emergency Department at The Scarborough Hospital and admitted as non-responsive. Though George Tanasescu passed away that same day, Sorina and her family are grateful for the care, compassion and respect they received from staff and physicians during their ordeal.
"Everything they did for him was totally extraordinary," says Sorina. "They probably go through the same process with everyone, but it didn't feel like a process; it felt like they were being human." > MORE |
The Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Scarborough believes service is the highest spiritual exercise and when done with the spirit of "love all and serve all" it becomes a truly rewarding experience. The group did just this when they donated 20 wheelchairs to The Scarborough Hospital in May.
"As Saimembers, we have a responsibility to share our love and care with others," says Mohana Thirukesan, President of the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre. "We believe that loving contributions coming from the compassionate hearts of our members will help heal the sick who depend on wheelchairs for mobility." > MORE |
