What started out as a routine home dialysis consultation could have ended up much worse for Chronic Kidney Disease patient Mike Sun, if not for the sharp instincts and skills of Nurse Practitioner Paulette Lewis.

On the morning of March 16, as Mike was having the home dialysis consultation with Paulette at the hospital's Chronic Kidney Disease and Home Dialysis unit, she noticed that Mike did not look well. She quickly made a few phone calls and arranged for him to be admitted to the General campus that afternoon.

In our Maternal Newborn and Childcare program, we deliver nearly 5,000 babies each year, and provide a wide range of care for mothers, newborns and children.

Yet the number of births at our hospital has been declining in recent years, and we recently commissioned an external review to look at the reasons why. The goal was to develop a strategy moving forward that would improve patient care and experience, staff morale and overall program efficiency - ensuring our patients were getting the best possible care for the fewest possible healthcare dollars.
