TSH is MY Scarborough Hospital!

Elaine Beverley was impressed with TSH's

In a world that is ever-changing, Elaine Beverley hopes the care provided by The Scarborough Hospital remains absolutely the same.

"My experience with your hospital was wonderful from start to finish," said Elaine, who visited TSH for an Oxford knee replacement. "The caring and compassion along with the professionalism made my stay at your hospital very memorable."

Elaine was referred to Dr. Jim Rathburn by her physiotherapist, but even though he came highly recommended, Elaine didn't have high hopes. She had previously visited three other physicians who said there was nothing wrong or that they couldn't help her. However, hardly being able to walk, she gave Dr. Rathburn and TSH a try.

"I was really surprised because I thought healthcare would be the same at every hospital, but it's not," said Elaine. "Dr. Rathburn performed a great knee replacement and the after care of your Orthopaedic ward was exemplary."

She added that Dr. Rathburn was very helpful. He took time to explain why she was experiencing pain, the benefits of a partial replacement and how the procedure would improve her quality of life. She was also impressed by the nursing staff who provided care during her four-day recovery.

"I never had to call the nurses," recalled Elaine. "They were always checking in and asking how the pain was. I can't say enough about the care I received while being ministered to by these nurses.

"They were diligent in their profession, or should I say vocation, because it certainly was apparent they considered their work a vocation and not just a job."

She added that the student nurses were also caring, kind and respectful.

Elaine plans to revisit TSH in the fall for surgery on her other knee, and is looking forward to another wonderful patient experience.

The nurses are learning new skill and building confidence

The Scarborough Hospital was pleased to support 25 nurses who participated in the Late Career Nurse Initiative, a program to encourage nurses to remain in the workforce.

TSH Chinese psychiatrists reflect various backgrounds

'Mental Health for All' is this year's theme for Mental Health Week (May 7 to 13). It's a fitting choice given that mental illness affects people of all ages, from every socioeconomic background and all cultures. Countering the stigma of mental illness, especially in certain communities, has been an ongoing mission of the Mental Health Services Department of The Scarborough Hospital.

One of those communities - a large Chinese population located around the Birchmount campus of TSH - is well served by the hospital's seven Chinese psychiatrists and a strong contingent of Chinese nurses and support staff.
