TSH is MY Scarborough Hospital!

Greetings!

On March 1, The Scarborough Hospital held the third It's Time to Talk speakers' series, "Food for Thought: You Are What You Eat". The presentations dealt with heart healthy lifestyle changes, the dangers in favourite comfort foods, eating well on a budget and body image and eating disorders. Thanks to all the speakers for helping individuals and families gain a greater understanding of the impact food and nutrition can have on their health. Presentations from the event are available on our website and you can view photos on our Flickr site. Watch for details on the next event in our It's Time to Talk series.

The talented team of healthcare professionals at The Scarborough Hospital are healing the heart and soul with their artistic contributions to the latest exhibit hosted by the Volunteers Artists' Walkway. TSH Talents, the fourth exhibit run by a small group of volunteers who share a passion for art, features artwork created by hospital staff, volunteers and physicians using a wide range of creative expression.

Some days it feels like we never see the sun. With an average of nine hours of daylight during the winter months (compared to about 15 hours during the summer), most Canadians are not getting the sun exposure required for sufficient levels of Vitamin D between October to March.

"Low blood levels of Vitamin D are common in Canada," says Sara Mahdavi, Nephrology Dietician at The Scarborough Hospital. "In many scientific studies, low levels of Vitamin D have been linked to several diseases such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and cancer of breast, prostate and colon."
