TSH is MY Scarborough Hospital!

Greetings!

The Scarborough Hospital's Department of Diversity, Equity & Stakeholder Outreach has teamed up with several community partners to host the Newcomers Health Fair, featuring a wide range of health-related topics for new Canadians. The event will be held on Thursday, October 20 at The HUB, 2660 Eglinton Ave. East, between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. The Fair is a joint effort between TSH and the Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities, Central East Regional Cancer Program and Toronto Public Health. It is open to the public and admission is free. For more information or to register, call 416-640-7390.
TSH's PICC program internationally recognized

The international spotlight shone on The Scarborough Hospital's IV Team when it played host to clinicians from Mexico City on September 28. The delegation, which included an oncologist, a specialist in infectious diseases, a general surgeon and the Chief of Cardiac Anaesthesiology, were here to learn how TSH successfully implemented a bedside peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) program.

Join us for a spot of tea and more!

Tea anyone? TSH Volunteers are getting ready for this month's High Tea being held during their annual Bazaar. The Bazaar runs on Thursday, October 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Irene Stickland room at the Birchmount campus. There's a Silent Auction and lots of goodies on sale: jewelry, knitting, crafts, books, baking, samosas and Jamaican patties. The Bazaar is a terrific place to shop for some early holiday gifts, and proceeds support the Volunteers' fundraising efforts for The Scarborough Hospital. The Silent Auction items will be available for viewing and bids beginning Monday, October 17 outside the cafeteria at the Birchmount campus. Tickets for the High Tea can also be purchased between October 17 and 19 by the Silent Auction area for $8.

Talking about addictions can be challenging

The figures are staggering-worldwide, over 76 million people have an alcohol use disorder, more than 15 million have drug use disorders and one-third over the age of 15 smoke tobacco. In Ontario alone, about 332,000 people have a gambling addiction. Despite the prevalence of these issues, knowing how to approach a friend or loved one about a substance abuse or addiction problem can be challenging.

Roberto Mazzei, Social Worker in the Outpatient Mental Health Program at The Scarborough Hospital, points out that it's important to be aware of the common myths that surround substance abuse and addictions.
