
The Scarborough Hospital is pleased to announce that Stephen Smith, a senior airline executive for more than 20 years, has been appointed Chair of The Scarborough Hospital's Board of Directors after serving as Vice-Chair since 2008. Last Thursday's forum, Breaking Barriers: Stigma, Families and Mental Health, was well-organized and well-attended. The presentations from our second speakers' series dealt with depression, anxiety, psychosis, substance abuse and dementia aimed at helping families have difficult health-related conversations with their loved ones. Research shows that pre-operative teaching programs help children and families feel more comfortable on the day of surgery. Based on this research, the Child Life Specialists at The Scarborough Hospital have designed a pre-operative teaching program called "Hello Hospital." In "Hello Hospital", the Child Life Specialists meet with children ages three to 13 and their families one to two weeks before their surgery to explain what to expect on their big day.
