TSH is MY Scarborough Hospital

Greetings!

The Scarborough Hospital is filled with talented people, whose work touches the lives of our patients on a daily basis. And as if their interdisciplinary, clinical and interpersonal skills weren't enough, many of our physicians and staff have tremendous artistic talent, too. Read on to learn how PULSE is inspiring philanthropy and pride of workplace on national television.

Can an office that works together also sing together? Global TV posed the question last summer when it announced Canada Sings, an original reality series that challenged Canadians to form workplace glee clubs and battle it out in competition for a charity.

The Scarborough Hospital was up for the challenge. Staff from throughout the hospital came together, named their glee club Pulse, were excited to be selected one of the top 25 teams, then ecstatic to be chosen for the show. Will this feisty team of nine healthcare professionals win on Canada Sings on Wednesday, August 31? Tune in to Global TV at 9 p.m. and watch as they showcase their community hospital and compete to raise funds for The Scarborough Hospital Foundation

The Scarborough Hospital has received a $191,000 grant from the provincial government and the Greenbelt Fund to support an exciting new project to add more fresh, local food cooked from scratch to inpatient meals.

"We're calling this project 'reFRESHing our Menu' because we're capitalizing on the strength of our existing food services department, while also offering our patient a new and diverse menu of meal choices made with healthy, Ontario-grown food," said TSH Vice President of Patient Experience Anne Marie Males.

Our blog Transforming TSH documents our journey to transform and innovate the patient experience in Food Services, Patient Relations, Diversity and Emergency Care. A recent post by Susan Bull, Manager of Nutrition and Food Services at our General campus, answered the question "What happened to the food?"

Volunteer Services regularly holds information sessions to discuss current volunteer opportunities and to assist those interested in submitting an application to volunteer. The next Volunteer Information Sessions are being held in the Auditorium at the General campus on Thurs., Sept. 15 at 9:30 a.m. and in the Irene Stickland Centre at the Birchmount campus on Tues., Sept. 20 at 1: 30 p.m. Pre-registration for these sessions is not required.

The Scarborough Hospital Volunteer Artists Walkway introduced 'Children's Art', on exhibit from August 15 to September 30, in the West Wing at the TSH General campus. Formerly the TSH Art Gallery, this space has now been renamed the Artists Walkway and is now under the auspices of TSH Volunteer Services. This current exhibit of Scarborough community 'Children's Art' is made possible through the generosity of Catherine Hawthorn of Framing Dames Art Program for Children and Adults, and the children who loaned their paintings.

Choose a 'quit day' at least four weeks before surgery

Did you know that 52 per cent of smokers experience post-operative problems and are more at risk of infections and complications? That's why Dr. John Oyston, an Anesthesiologist at The Scarborough Hospital, developed a 'stop smoking for safer surgery' plan to assist patients.

"Part of my job as an anesthesiologist is to ensure patients are in the best possible condition before surgery, and I feel it's an uphill battle with smokers," he explains. "I am tired of seeing patients cough and sputter in the recovery room and not do well during surgery."
