TSH is MY Scarborough Hospital

Greetings!

Just a few minutes of your time and a painless cheek swab could help save a life.

On May 26, The Scarborough Hospital will be hosting a stem cell drive in partnership with Shari's Mission and OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network. Stem cell transplants can treat blood-related diseases such as leukemia, aplastic anemia and inherited immune system and metabolic disorders - but fewer than 30 per cent of patients who need transplants find a compatible donor within their own family. The rest rely on those who have volunteered to donate stem cells to anyone in need. If you are between 17 and 50 years of age, and meet certain health criteria, a simple cheek swab is all it takes to join OneMatch's registry. Please join us on Thursday, May 26 from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in the West Wing of the General campus at 3050 Lawrence Ave. E.  More information about stem cell donations is available at www.onematch.ca.
Dr. Shin will speak on September 15

The Scarborough Hospital is pleased to announce the second in our It's Time to Talk speakers' series "Breaking Barriers: Stigma, Families and Mental Health." Let The Scarborough Hospital's experts guide you on how to have conversations on topics like depression and anxiety, as well as help you navigate the mental health system in your community. You are invited to attend our free health fair and forum on Wednesday, September 15, 2011. Parking, refreshments and a package of resource guides are included. Space is limited, so please reserve your seat today.

Dr. Tim Sproule and Dr. Sarah Wong thrilled with results

Two of The Scarborough Hospital's plastic surgeons have done it again -- performing microsurgical 'firsts' in their volunteer work in the Third World. Drs. Tim Sproule and Sarah Wong travelled to La Paz, Bolivia in March, where they set up the first microsurgery course using live animal dissections ever attempted in the developing world.

"This trip was 110 per cent successful," says Dr. Wong. "Not only did we conduct a course with six graduates and train surgeons to do microsurgery, we actually did the surgery on two patients."

Bedwetting often runs in families

Bedwetting is considered a natural part of child development, and children usually grow out of it by the time they are seven years of age.

"While it can be embarrassing for the child, it's important to remember that bedwetting is usually not a sign of any deeper medical or emotional issues," explains Dr. Nick Logarakis, a urologist at The Scarborough Hospital who specializes in children and young adults.
