Hospital eyes redevelopment of aging operating suites, pharmacy and lab
Minister of Health Deb Matthews speaks to Nurallah Rahim, Surgical Patient Care Director at TSH, during a recent tour of the operating suites at the hospital.

The Scarborough Hospital is currently working on plans to redevelop the operating suites at the General campus, and recently had the opportunity to give Ontario Minister of Health Deb Matthews a first hand look at the aging facility.

Built in 1956, the operating rooms are located in the oldest part of the hospital. They are too small for many modern pieces of surgical equipment, and the current electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems no longer meet requirements.

Last fall, Scarborough Centre MPP Brad Duguid announced a $3 million grant to support planning for the redevelopment that would house 16 full operating rooms and four rooms for minimally invasive procedures.

The hospital is about to formally ask the province to approve and support TSH's need for a significant redevelopment of the existing surgical suites, sterile processing department, pharmacy, laboratory and necessary supporting infrastructure at the General campus.

"Minister Matthews seems to understand our need," says Dr. Steve Jackson, Chief of Staff. "She asked several good questions and showed a genuine interest. We feel something is really going to happen."
TSH launches community health blog:
Top Tips for Staying Healthy

More and more, people are turning to the internet as their primary source of information for everything from product reviews to health advice. But finding a trusted source can be challenging.

To help our community find reliable, relevant health advice, The Scarborough Hospital has launched the Top Tips for Staying Healthy blog, with weekly postings containing proactive advice from our own healthcare professionals.

This week's postings have included back-to-school tips for hand hygiene and making healthy, child-friendly lunches, as well as ways to avoid overheating during the city's Extreme Heat Alert.

Readers can comment on posts, and we hope to develop this blog into a dynamic online forum that addresses the issues and concerns impacting our global community on a daily basis.

We welcome your questions or ideas for future posts on the blog.
