Community Advisory Council marks
one year anniversary

Changing "the way things have always been done" is never easy, which is part of the challenge faced by The Scarborough Hospital's Community Advisory Council.

"There are very few hospitals in this province that have successful community advisory groups," explains Dr.  John Wright, TSH's President and CEO.  "They either end existing on paper and little else, or they become adversarial. Here we're trying to build something very different-a partnership where the CAC and the hospital work together on issues that affect the community, finding better solutions for all.  That is going to take some time to build."

Karen Gordon, the CAC's chair, would agree that the first year has been challenging and rewarding.

"The CAC spent the first part of the year defining our mandate and terms of reference and establishing where we fit with the both the hospital and the community," explains Gordon.  "We will spend the next year working hard on getting the community engaged into the process and providing the CAC with information and feedback.  The process isn't quite perfect and there are still some issues to work out-but with the commitment of the CAC, Board and Administration-we are certain we will get there."

But both Gordon and Wright agree that the relationship has already netted benefits for the Scarborough community.

"The CAC gave us some advice on the budget-good advice that we took-that I believe was of great benefit to the community," explains Wright.  "We need to work together to find more opportunities like that where the CAC is a real "value add" on behalf of the people of Scarborough."

In the coming months, the CAC will be called upon to play a strong role in the Clinical Action Planning Process, helping to evaluate the hospital's plans against the concept of the ideal patient experience.

The next CAC meeting (which is open to the public) takes place:

Monday, June 21, 2010, 6:30 p.m., Boardroom, General campus
