TSH's Community Advisory Council
The Scarborough Hospital's Community Advisory Council is now up and running.  Composed of annual members, the role of the Community Advisory Council is to help ensure that The Scarborough Hospital and its Board of Directors are accountable and transparent to all the community.  Members of the council have an opportunity to report at each board meeting and meetings of the Council are open to all.

Annual General Meeting Survey:
Thank you for your feedback!

Many thanks to all of the annual members who took the time to fill out the feedback survey following the Annual General Meeting.  Your suggestions will be incorporated into the planning for next year's meeting and other community meetings and events.

Eighty-eight percent of respondents indicated that the question and answer period was their favourite part of the meeting so you will notice that this has been continued in the upcoming Town Hall meeting.  Additionally, one respondent noted that asking questions in public is intimidating for many people, so made the suggestion that there be an opportunity to send questions in ahead of time if they so wish. That too has been implemented.
October is Osteoporosis Month
October is Osteoporosis Month, and The Scarborough Hospital is one of 36 fracture clinic sites in Ontario-and the only hospital in Scarborough-to host Osteoporosis Canada's Fracture Clinic Screening Program. Since it was launched in June, 2007, 873 patients have been identified through TSH as having or being at risk for osteoporosis.

The first fracture is one of the most important predictors of future fractures. This innovative strategy screens and identifies at-risk patients, educating them about their risks, advising them about preventive measures and referring them to their family physician for follow-up care.

Naveen Noordeen is the Osteoporosis Screening Coordinator at both the General and Birchmount campuses. Her role is to identify patients 50 years of age and older who exhibit risk factors for osteoporosis, providing support to connect them with primary healthcare and community-based services as needed.

Drs. Pervez Ali and Christine Young are Orthopaedic Champions for Osteoporosis Canada and the Ontario Orthopaedic Association. Their role is to encourage participation as well as provide support and act as a resource for the Fracture Clinic Screening Program.

The Scarborough Hospital is pleased to be part of this strategy to 'reduce fractures, morbidity, mortality and costs from osteoporosis.'

The Birchmount bazaar turns 25

Though the Birchmount campus has only been open since 1985, this year marks the 25th anniversary of the Volunteers' Annual Bazaar. To celebrate their silver anniversary, the Volunteers are inviting the entire community to this year's bazaar on Thursday, Oct. 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This will be a wonderful opportunity to pick up some early holiday gifts including crafts, jewellery, ornaments, artwork and the ever-popular baked goods.

The Scarborough Hospital (TSH), Canada's largest urban community hospital, delivers innovative, high quality patient care, advocates for our community's health and wellness issues, and is a leader in research, teaching and learning.  TSH is a regional treatment centre for dialysis and is renowned for its sexual assault care centre and mental health programs.  Affiliated with the University of Toronto, TSH is also a referral centre for vascular surgery, pacemakers and corneal transplants.
