Dear Achilles Enthusiast!

Below are just a few brief blurbs and photos from our latest newsletter which covers some of the amazing events, accomplishments and triumphs from the past few months.

From the 10th Annual Hope & Possibility 5 Miler, to the Paratriathlon National Championships in Austin, to the exciting news from our chapters in Nashville, Philadelphia, Japan and many other places near and far, it's been a very busy and amazing time for the Achilles family.

Now that fall is upon us, marathon season is in full swing and the next few months promise to be very exciting as well.

We hope you will enjoy and be inspired by the tremendous accomplishments of our athletes and the dedication and devotion of our volunteers.

A Message from the President
Dick Traum

A couple of weeks ago, we received a call from CNN with the exciting news that I was selected to be a CNN Hero semi-finalist. The idea of this program is to identify "everyday people who make a difference." The contest receives over 10,000 entries. I wasn't aware of even being nominated. Four camera shoots and a week later, CNN aired a great video and wrote a terrific article. It was some of the best media coverage Achilles has ever received. The video highlighted what I believe makes Achilles successful. Read more...

Achilles proudly fielded eight fierce competitors: Diane Berberian, Lamar Brown, Geoffrey Kennedy, William Lister, Rafael Oliver, Joe Paschall, Benjamin Simmons, and Daniel Tratt.  Read more ....

Jon Stewart w Freedom Team member at Hope & Possibility

This year 36 wounded servicemen from Walter Reed joined us for another amazing Hope and Possibility weekend. Escorted by the Nam Knights and the NYPD, the team arrived traveling in a complimentary Yankee Bus. Loud cheers could be heard blocks away as bystanders and supporters anxiously awaited their arrival to the Union League Club. U-Haul welcomed the group with a pizza party at the Club. That evening the NY Mets provided 100 complimentary tickets to the coveted Subway Series game and honored this team of heroes during a segment on their jumbo-tron. Read more ....

Achilles Kids Central Park Training Run

Achilles Kids Weekend Program has been working harder than ever over the spring and summer. JCC workouts continued throughout the summer with kids and volunteers enjoying some fun and creative themes, including Olympics, Beach Party, and "I Love New York." Our not-so-little ones began to complement our ongoing Jewish Community Center workouts with training sessions in Central Park. From March through June our kids impressed everyone - their parents, teachers, volunteers, and even themselves - by sticking with a rigorous training schedule and working their way up from one to three laps of the bridle path in Central Park. Their times got faster and their competitive fire burned bright. After hundreds of hours of training, 13 Achilles Kids completed the five mile course and 13 conquered the 1.7 mile loop. Read more .....
