Spring 2012
Achilles Nashville
Dear Achilles Enthusiast!

The first half of 2012 is going by at "warp" speed, and the same can be said of our athletes, whose accomplishments continue to amaze and inspire us.

Spring has sprung and new chapters are blossoming all over the U.S. Achilles Nashville (pictured above), Chicago, Greater Phoenix, and Bergen County, NJ, are just a few of the new chapters joining the Achilles family.

Below are just a few brief blurbs and photos from our latest newsletter and a sneak peek at some upcoming events, including our 10th Annual Hope & Possibility 5 Miler on Sunday, June 24th. Hope to see you there!

Thank you for being a part of the Achilles family.

Go Achilles!
A Message from the President
Dick Traum

It's been an interesting few months. Last week, we had the opportunity to "OK" an order for more than 3,000 pairs of running shoes and 7,000 T shirts. The T Shirts are for all members of our Achilles Kids program. These are children with all types of disabilities who run during the school year under the guidance of their Adaptive Physical Education teachers. Each child is given a map of their borough or city. The map has a route of 26.2 miles with pictures focusing on points of interest. At each workout, the distance, typically several laps, is translated into miles. For example, 24 laps in the gym may equal a mile. Achilles Kids who complete the entire distance win a pair of running shoes. Read more...

This January Matthew Turner, a visually impaired runner, had the opportunity to run the Disney Half Marathon as winner of the Achilles Team Challenge. Fellow inspirational Achilles athlete Allan Tyson completed an incredible feat by finishing the Goofy Challenge on this enchanted weekend. Read more ....

Nashville: From Zero to 50 in Eight Weeks

Maybe it's the right city, maybe it's the right time, but without the pure joy and passion that is Sarah Hart, now president of Achilles International-Nashville, and her jack-of-all-trades, workhorse collaborator Melanie Yappen it could not have happened with such style and grace. (see group photo, above).

Beginning with an exploratory meeting of Nashville community leaders on January 31, Hart and Yappen have built a robust chapter complete with an advisory board of influential leaders and local sponsors: Bulow Biotech Prosthetics, Nashville Striders, CapitalSpring, Goldstein/Sacks & Associates, The Athlete's House, LeGarde Chiropractic & Wellness, and AustralUS Physiotherapy. Partner organizations include Sports4All Foundation, Beyond Therapy - A Shepherd Center Program, ABLE Youth, Technology Access Center, Tennessee Association of Blind Athletes and RWWA (Run Walk Wheel & Roll).  Read more ....

Freedom Team at Disney Half-Marathon

On January 7, 2012, twenty-one Achilles athletes participated in the Cigna Disney Half Marathon. Cigna provided funds to sponsor many of the athletes and also had their employees run as volunteer guides. Cigna CEO David Cordani ran with Freedom Team member Matias Ferreria and Senior Vice President for Cigna's Disability Business Mark Marsters ran with visually impaired athlete Bruce Stoddard. Thanks to Air Compassion for Veterans, which provided complimentary flights for Freedom Team members and their families, and Shades of Green, which provided complimentary rooms and hosted a dinner for the Achilles athletes and their guests. Read more ....

Achilles Kids Super Bowl Fun Run

The Achilles Kids weekend program has been growing by leaps and bounds! This winter we focused on developing important health habits with our Nutrition Fun Run, celebrated retro music and clothing choices with the Blast from the Past workout, explored all the fun that Groundhog's Day, Valentine's Day, and President's Day have to offer, and decked ourselves out in plenty of green shamrocks for Saint Patrick's Day. Read more .....
