First-ever United Way of Midland County Flash Mob Helps Celebrate Historic Campaign Results

Flash Mob Result Reveal

When you have a big goal, you need an equally big celebration. That was the feeling of the hundreds that came together for the unveiling of the United Way of Midland County results at the November Chamber Connection.

Those in attendance got to experience first-hand the excitement of this historic achievement, with a profound twist. At 6:15 p.m., the background music faded and everyone's attention turned to the dance floor as Dominic Zoeller of Dow Chemical jumped to the dance floor to the theme music from "Rocky." He was soon joined by others, until a full troupe of volunteer dancers took the floor in a finely choreographed routine. Stunned guests quickly joined in the festivities as this "Flash Mob" announced the historic results.

While our volunteer dancers may not have known what they were in for, we are grateful for their energy and enthusiasm during the secret rehearsals leading up to the event.

Carpenter Street School students bring the joy of Christmas to families in need this year!

Carpenter Student Sharing Tree
Carpenter Elementary School first and second graders experienced the true meaning of Christmas through the Sharing Tree this year. The children sold muffins and cookies for twenty-five cents each and raised $400 to purchase gifts for children who wouldn't have a Christmas without the generosity of others.

Truer words couldn't have been spoken by an eight year-old as she shared what she learned from the experience, "It really is better to give than to receive!"

Holiday Wishes Charity Gala Helps to Fulfill Sharing Tree Wishes

The second annual Holiday Wishes Charity Gala raised nearly $12,000 to ensure area families have Christmas gifts under the tree and warm homes this winter. Proceeds from the event were divided between Sharing Tree and the Midland Area Homes heating assistance program.

"We are seeing an increase in Sharing Tree requests for basic needs," said Ann Fillmore, Executive Director. There are 15,000 wishes to be fulfilled this year, more than ever before.

With hundreds of teens volunteering each year, their impact on our community is great, whether teaching a 5-year-old to read or brightening the day of a local shut in. They've learned early the power of giving back.
