Artist Talk: Courtney M. Leonard
Cultural Continuity: Tradition as Contemporary Context
December 10, 2011, 2:00 - 3:00 pm MoCNA Boardroom

In conjunction with MoCNA's exhibition Counting Coup, Courtney M. Leonard will present on her practice. Leonard (Shinnecock), and IAIA alumna, is a multimedia artist who explores the evolution of language, image, and culture through mixed media pieces of clay, video, audio, and tangible objects. Her lecture will focus on the aspect that "tradition is not stagnant: through the continuity of her work, which lies within the carrying of tradition through cross cultural connections and material adaptation.

(Courtney M. Leonard's artist talk is supported through the Ford Foundation.)

 IAIA Digital Dome 2011

Here at the Institute of American Indian Arts, our students work on Macintosh work stations to create their art. When creating the Digital Dome Production course we ran into a major obstacle, how to run PC based software on a Mac. In the dome we run Sky-Skan's DigitalSky 2 software, but Sky-Skan does not offer support for running the software on a Macintosh.

We had our trusty student intern, Joseph "Seph" Turnipseed at the helm of this task. After several attempts, Seph was able to successfully install Windows 95 using Bootcamp and install DigitalSky 2. A couple of tweaks later and now our students can preview their files before going into the dome to test. It's a great way to get to know the software and learn scripting.

the center for lifelong education

The last of November and first of December, Jaime Gaskin and Hayes A. Lewis attended the W. K. Kellog Grantee Convening at Tamaya Resort. The CLE is one of 50 grantees in the State of New Mexico. This convening provided an opportunity to interact directly with Program Officers and to strengthen collaborations. In December the CLE staff continued with direct involvement to support the Pueblos of Cochiti, Santo Domingo, San Felipe, Santa Ana, Sandia and Zia to plan ways to strengthen tribal involvement with Bernalillo Public Schools. The CLE staff have facilitated meetings with the tribal educators and Governors to enhance their understanding of PL 81-874 Impact Aid, The NM Indian Education Act and the Indian Policies and Procedures associated with Impact Aid funding so the tribes will be able to renegotiate relations and more effectively influence policy & support the needs of children. The CLE staff have been assisting the Laguna tribe to plan a Tribal Youth Summit for December 14 at the Laguna Middle School. On December 28 & 29, the CLE staff will provide a team building facilitation for the Zuni Board of Education, school administrators, tribal council, and parents in the Zuni Public Schools.

student thoughts

Experiment as much as possible especially with different mediums and take advantage of the studios offered. Even if you mess up, like with these panels, I cut them wrong, a mistake can be cool art. Don't try to impress instructors or other people but impress yourself with your dedication. Practice and master your technique - stay true to who you are. Don't get down about critiques, everyone is entitled to an opinion. They are trying to help you improve yourself as an artist!
