3 Steps to Spring Clean Anything |
There are three basic steps to spring cleaning, which are helpful to follow no matter what area you are tackling. 1. Empty & Purge
One of the biggest parts of spring cleaning is getting rid of clutter. The less clutter you have, the easier it is to keep things clean. Empty out the space, go through everything and purge any unused or unwanted items. Pay special attention to getting rid of anything past its prime, such as any expired food, medicine and old make up. 2. Clean, Clean, Clean! Winter is dirty. All that sand, salt and mud on the roads inevitably makes its way into our homes. Spring cleaning goes beyond regular cleaning to clear out the dirt and grime of winter and freshen up everything for the new season. Dust off cabinet shelves, vacuum closet floors, sweep the sand out of the garage - you get the idea! 3. Organize & Put it Away Once you have thoroughly cleaned, it's time to put what you are keeping back in an organized manner. This might mean using the same containers if they were working well for you, but be sure to give them a good cleaning while you're at it. If your previous system wasn't working, it's time to try something new. Choose containers that you like and that fit the space and the items you are storing - with a little room to grow. |
Common Spring Projects |
While you should definitely tailor your spring cleaning list to what matters most to you and your family, here are some common projects to get your list started:
-
Clean carpets, floors and rugs
-
-
Dust and vacuum thoroughly
-
Move furniture and vacuum or sweep underneath
-
Clean out kitchen cabinets and refrigerator/freezer
-
-
-
Clean out and declutter closets
-
Store winter clothing and linens
-
This is also a good time to tackle storage areas like the attic, garage and basement. You should also replace smoke/carbon monoxide detector batteries, air and furnace filters and check your fire extinguishers too. Create your custom list and get started! |
Simplify Spring |
If you feel overwhelmed by the idea of spring cleaning, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- It doesn't have to be done alone. Enlist the help of your family or even a good friend to help you tackle some projects - make it fun and reward yourselves when the work is done!
- It doesn't have to be done all at once. Focus on a couple projects each weekend and tailor them to the weather - on a lovely day, get outside and clean up the patio or deck and save the closet clearing for a rainy day.
- You don't have to take a one-size-fits-all approach. While there are many great checklists and resources out there, make your list match what's important to you. Are you anxious to get out for a bike ride? Clearing out your garage so you can get to your bike should be top on your list.
