June 24: International Maritime Organization Day of the Seafarer
First, I want to apologize for being so behind in getting this e-news out. I should have focused on this last week, so that all of you could done some planning in your communities. Yet, in each of our own small ways, we can still remember and pray for our seafarers on their special days.
I have included a couple of articles on the Day of the Seafarer, and also a special prayer for seafarers that was written Archbishop T.D. Roberts of Bombay, India. This prayer appeared originally in In Christ and the Sailor, written by the AOS co-founder Peter Anson in 1954.
So, tomorrow, as you are having your morning cup of coffee, reading the Saturday newspaper, and praying your morning prayers, please say a special prayer for the millions of domestic and international seafarers.
Finally, I just came across a little note about our AOS USA Annual Meeting host city, Duluth, and have included in this issue.
Yours in Christ Jesus,
Fr. Sinclair Oubre, J.C.L.,
President
P.S.: I am healing well. I will start a stationary bike on Tuesday, and then in two weeks, begin to put pressure, and walk on the leg.

IMO urges the world to "tweet" and "like" on 2011 Day of the Seafarer
Day of the Seafarer, 25 June, 2011
Briefing: 34, June 21, 2011
People everywhere are being urged to voice their support for seafarers by using social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, by posting videos on YouTube, discussing seafarer issues on LinkedIn, or even writing a blog about life at sea, to mark the first ever international Day of the Seafarer, on 25 June, 2011. Last year, the Diplomatic Conference which met in Manila to adopt milestone revisions to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (the STCW Convention) and its associated Code, also agreed that the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole, should be marked annually with a 'Day of the Seafarer'. The date chosen was 25 June, the day on which the amendments were formally adopted. An innovative web-based and social media campaign forms the centrepiece of efforts to celebrate the 'Day of the Seafarer' and to pay tribute to the world's 1.5 million seafarers - men and women from all over the globe - for the unique, and all-too-often overlooked, contribution they make to the well-being of all of us. The campaign, which emphasizes the fact that shipping is the engine of global commerce, responsible for the carriage of more than 90 per cent of world trade, and that it is seafarers who ensure the engine runs smoothly, delivering the essential items and commodities on which our lives depend, has already garnered support from industry partners, seafarers' groups and many more. The campaign is designed to be both educational and inspirational, including live, interactive links with seafarers aboard ships at sea. Everyone is encouraged to send the simple yet powerful message: "Thank you, seafarers". To join the campaign, go to www.imo.org and click Day of the Seafarer. GOVERNMENT OF CANADA RECOGNIZES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE SEAFARER
OTTAWA, Jun 24, 2011, 2011 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) -- In recognition of June 25, the Day of the Seafarer, the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, encourages Canadians to show their support to all those who work on ships in Canada and abroad.
"Tomorrow will be an opportunity for us all to pay special tribute to seafarers, who keep people and goods moving safely and efficiently, often under challenging conditions," said Minister Lebel. "We can be proud of the Canadian men and women who earn a living at sea and help this country prosper through their hard work and dedication." Last year, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) declared June 25 the annual Day of the Seafarer to mark the unique and often overlooked contributions seafarers make to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole. This special day is also an opportunity to educate the public about issues facing modern-day seafarers.
This year, the IMO has launched an online campaign and is asking people to voice their support for the world's 1.5 million seafarers through social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
"Canada, the first official member state of the IMO, is proud to support seafarers on this special day," added Minister Lebel. "I encourage people to join the campaign and show seafarers their gratitude." In 2009 in Canada, $152.2 billion was handled in international trade.
Internationally, ships carry more than 90 per cent of world trade. The IMO is the United Nations specialized agency responsible for the safety and security of shipping, and for preventing marine pollution by ships.

Aquino declares June 25 as Day of Filipino Seafarer
Thursday, June 16, 2011
PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III has declared June 25 of every year as the Day of the Filipino Seafarer to recognize the seafarers' contribution to the country's national development.
The President issued Proclamation 183 to give respect and gratitude to the Filipino seafarers who have demonstrated best traits of the Filipino in the global maritime community.
The proclamation was signed by the President on June 3, 2011.
"The Conference of Parties, under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), that adopted major revisions otherwise known as the 'Manila Amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping (STCW)' for seafarers and its associated Code that was held in Manila from 21-25 June 2010 approved a resolution declaring every 25th Day of June each year as the 'Day of the Seafarer,'" the proclamation read.
The IMO has encouraged government, shipping organizations, companies, shipowners and all other parties concerned to duly and appropriately promote the Day of the Seafarer and take action to celebrate it meaningfully.
The United Nations Organization (UNO) has recognized the important role that seafarers play in the continued growth of the global economy and in the promotion of safety of life at sea and the protection of the marine environment.
Aquino directed all maritime agencies and government agencies including government-owned and controlled corporations as well as private groups to support the commemoration of the event.
He also designated the administrator of the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) to lead the observance of the event each year.
He authorized Marina to create a steering committee, a working group, and a secretariat composed of representatives from various agencies to lead efforts in commemoration of the occasion. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)

A PRAYER FOR SEAFARERS
Bless and keep safe. O Jesus.
All who pass over the seas
Which you have wonderfully made.
From which you took your first Apostles.
And which. while dwelling among us.
You tamed hy your touch.
Subduing it also to your children's purpose
By your divising in their minds.
By your courage in their hearts.
By your skill in their hands.
Convert the minds and hearts of wicked men.
From making into instruments of death
Your gifts bestowed for good and happiness.
Hear the prayers of mothers and wives and children.
Of hearts wounded by long separation and uncertainty.
Give to captains. officers and men
Skill. courage and endurance.
Your character and virtue:
To the masters of powerful engines
Your greater power of human brain and heart.
May we the people of the sea- ports
To which arc brought by sailors everyday
At the risk of their own lives
Your children and your gifts.
May we value our privilege to make for your sailors
A haven from every danger to body and to soul.
Such a home as they need. and we owe.
To all sailors. O Jesus.
And to all living souls you have entrusted to them.
Give a clear mind to steer your course.
Wisdom and courage to hold it
Safely to your appoi nted haven
Of happiness unending. Amen.

Prayer for Hurricane Season
O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude; you are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a storm-less eternity awaits us. Amen.

PRAYER FOR HURRICANE SEASON
O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude; You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf of Mexico, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its sleep, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster.
During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem
where a storm less eternity awaits us.
Amen

Duluth Port Wins Award
Posted at: 06/23/2011 4:35 PM
When the Railway Industrial Clearance Association (RICA) handed out its Port Service Awards for North America this year, the Port of Duluth took top honors - sitting in first place, along with the Port of Mobile, in the Association's final rankings.
In final rankings, RICA's Top Ten Ports include: Duluth and Mobile (tied for first), Houston, Albany, Savannah, Charleston, Corpus Christi, NN/Norfolk/LPD, Tacoma, and Tampa.
The Clure Public Marine Terminal, Duluth's only general cargo facility, is owned by the Duluth Seaway Port Authority and operated by Lake Superior Warehousing Co., Inc. LSWCI has served as terminal operator since 1991, earning a world-class reputation for safe, efficient handling of dimensional and heavy-lift cargo.
"Being ranked first by RICA is a significant honor for us," said Jonathan Lamb, LSWCI vice president and general manager, "because it is presented by a group that deals specifically with dimensional cargoes and was awarded by the very people we serve."
Ballots were cast by representatives of several facets of the cargo-handling/transportation industry including, among others: railroads, ocean carriers, logistics providers, manufacturers, and trucking companies.
"This award comes on the heels of yet another milestone in the port's history," said Adolph Ojard, Port Authority executive director. "Just this month, we passed the one million mark in freight tons of wind turbine components handled through the Port of Duluth."
Not only has Duluth become a preferred transshipment hub for the wind energy industry, but with over 360,000 square feet of warehouse capacity, LSWCI has also become a North American distribution center for dozens of companies and cargoes.
