Tsunami victim's body found at

Columbia Mouth

Remains found near the mouth of Columbia River

have been identified as those of the only U.S. West

Coast victim of the March 11 tsunami, Dustin Douglas

Weber, 25.

Weber was washed to sea by a tsunami surge at the

mouth of the Klamath River, more than 300 miles

south of where the remains were discovered April 2

on a beach south of the Columbia River.

A person discovered the body near South Jetty in

Fort Stevens State Park, authorities said. The Oregon

State Medical Examiner's Office announced the

identification of the remains Tuesday.

The body was identified as Weber by a forensic odontologist using dental records, according to the Oregon State Police. Next of kin and the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office were notified.

The 25-year-old Bend, Ore., native had moved to Klamath shortly before the tsunami. Weber was seeking a new beginning in Klamath, happy to be in the land of his mother's heritage, the Yurok Tribe.

On the morning of the surges, he went to a spit of sand at the mouth of the Klamath with friends.

His father, Jon Weber, gave this account to The Associated Press last month:

"There was a sneaker wave that came down the shoreline. Some friends of his were down there taking pictures. I think he was expecting the wave to come out of the ocean, but it didn't. It came down the shoreline."

His mother, Lori Davis, added: "He was not looking in the direction it was coming from, but (his companions) saw it coming. They tried to run down there and save him. One of the guys almost had him by the shirt. They couldn't save him. They tried to yell for him, but the ocean was too loud."

It was the first tsunami-caused death on the West Coast of the contiguous states since 1964, when 11 people died in Del Norte County from surges spawned by an earthquake in Alaska.

Governor Brown Requests Presidential Major Disaster Declaration to Help Tsunami Recovery Efforts in California

Published: Thursday, April 7th, 2011

In a letter to President Barack Obama, Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. today requested a Presidential major disaster declaration for the state following the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami off the coast of Japan, which generated a water surge that caused over $48 million in damage to California ports, harbors, boats, businesses and infrastructure.

Governor Brown's letter asks for additional federal resources to supplement state and local repair and recovery efforts .

Today's request follows emergency proclamations issued by Governor Brown for Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo and Santa Cruz Counties and an Executive Order issued to waive the waiting period for victims to apply for unemployment insurance, expedite the hiring of emergency and cleanup personnel and request state tax officials to accommodate those affected by the water surge.

Federal damage threshold met

Gov. expected to ask Obama for assistance

Crescent City Harbor officials are crossing

their fingers after learning that California has

met the threshold to apply for federal disaster

relief funds.

Damages to the entire state had to exceed

$44 million in order to qualify for federal

assistance. California Emergency

Management Agency representatives said

the state sustained $48,147,098 in total

damages when tsunami surges rocked

coastal cities March 11.

Lori Newquist, spokesperson for Cal EMA, said Crescent City alone represents

about 43 percent of the state's damage estimate.

"Crescent City had $20,740,855 in damages," Newquist said.

That's in addition to the approximate $22.5 million in damages to the city's

harbor from a smaller tsunami in 2006.

Harbormaster Richard Young said he hadn't heard directly from state officials as

to whether or not the state had reached the $44 million threshold. However, he

said a declaration "should be on Gov. Jerry Brown's desk," once it's reached.

Representatives from the governor's office did not return calls for comment

Monday.

Once the governor sends a request for federal funds to President Barack

Obama, the president has  30 days to make a decision on whether or not to

send federal aid.

Congressman Mike Thompson said he'll weigh in at the federal level once the

governor makes his request. He said he'll send a letter asking the president to

speed up the process.

"Once the letter goes out, I'll make the phone calls and hopefully make sure it's

sped up," Thompson said Monday. "It's important we get this done quickly. We

can't afford to lollygag."

Young agreed and said it's extremely important the harbor receive funding so

people can get back to work. He said a federal declaration will greatly aid the

rebuilding process.

Why Aren't We Helping
the U.S. Tsunami Victims?-

Japan is Not the Only Country

In Need

Remains of the Crescent City California Harbor

I was hit with such sorrow today as I read through several articles in Oregon

and Northern California newspapers referring the tsunami destruction and

devastation that has been felt in these areas. Multiple harbors have been

destroyed and are in ruins, yet we have seen so little of this covered in the news.

If I had not gone looking for it I would not be aware of the destruction that took

place in the United States.

Crescent City, CA., was hit the hardest by the March 11th Tsunami here in the

states. There were 16 boats that were sunk and 47 damaged and possibly still

sinking. The entire dock system and much of the harbor was destroyed. Not to

mention the fact that 4 people were pulled into the sea-one of which has never

returned.

Next, if you move north a few miles into Oregon, you will find the same kind of

destruction in Brookings harbor. 80 percent of the dock structure was destroyed,

seven boats were swept out to sea, multiple boats damaged and several sunk.

This is certainly minor in comparison to Japan, but it is devastating for those living

there.

These are small fishing communities that depend on these boats and harbors for their livelihood and without them they have nothing. While many fishermen were

able to escape  the damage early Friday morning in both Brookings and Crescent

City by taking their boats out to sea, now they have no harbor in which to keep

their boat.

And what about Hawaii, particularly the Big Island which was hit the hardest.

There were multiple beach-front homes that were significantly damaged. In fact,

one home was completely swept away into the ocean. Many hotels and local

businesses suffered severe property losses and now are struggling to get things

cleaned up and repaired so that they may return to business.

So here is my question, completely understanding and agreeing that the massive

amount of destruction in Japan demands our attention and help. Are those

affected largely (although on a smaller scale in comparison, but just as devastating

to them personally) not deserving of our help? Or at least deserving of more news

coverage?

I am just in shock that I see "Japan Tsunami Relief" signs everywhere I go

whether I'm out shopping or on the internet. Yet nowhere have I seen any sign

of anyone asking for help for those in California, Oregon and Hawaii.

Maybe some of you have helped those in need locally but to be honest I have

not seen the out pour of help for these people like I have seen for those in Japan.

Again, I am not saying that helping the Japanese in their time of need is wrong.

In fact I absolutely believe what they have experienced and are continuing to

experience is horrific. However, I am asking why can't we help those close to us

as well?
