AOS Phone Scam Continues: Please Beware & Caution your Staff & Volunteers

Over the weekend, we informed you of a phone scam, whereby AOS Chaplains are contacted supposedly by an AOS National Director, Bishop, or Chaplain, in need of money.

These scams occur online often, but these new phone calls, stating that they are the AOS Director for Malaysia, or Deacon Albert from Canada, etc, are a bold new tactic.  Of course, anyone can get these names and positions from the internet.

Today, I received phone calls from 3 AOS Chaplains.  In one scenario, The National Director for Australia was calling from the Philippines in need of money. In 2 other cases the caller identified himself as Fr Eugene Benedict.  Of course, he was not either of the people he claimed to be.

Please be sure your staff and volunteers are aware of this situation.  If you do receive such a phone call, please report this immediately to your National Director and/or Regional Coordinator.

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Royal Caribbean International takes delivery today of the newest addition to the cruise line's fleet, Allure of the Seas, from STX Europe in Turku, Finland. With Captain Hernan Zini at the helm, Allure of the Seas will be departing Turku on October 29, 2010, starting the 13-day countdown to her U.S. debut into her homeport of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on Thursday, Nov. 11. Allure of the Seas joins sister-ship Oasis of the Seas as the world's largest and most revolutionary cruise ship. Fans and enthusiasts are invited to follow her trans-Atlantic crossing through daily onboard webisodes on www.AllureoftheSeas.com , and also by following @OasisandAllure on Twitter. Updates also will be posted on Chairman and CEO Richard Fain's "Chairman's Blog" on www.AllureoftheSeas.com and the "President's Blog" by President and CEO Adam Goldstein on www.RoyalCaribbean.com.

Royal Caribbean's strategic alliance with DreamWorks Animation, featuring new onboard parades, ice shows, aqua shows and experiences with the film studio's beloved characters, along with the at-sea debut of the Broadway production Chicago: The Musical, and Royal Caribbean Productions' new Blue Planet aerial production and Ice Games ice show, offer guests unparalleled entertainment options. Allure of the Seas also boasts 26 dining options, including the first ever Starbucks at sea; a new fine dining experience at 150 Central Park, created by The Culinary Institute of America alumna Molly Brandt; Samba Grill Brazilian steakhouse; Rita's Cantina, a casual Mexican restaurant offering the widest selection of margaritas at sea; and the Boardwalk Dog House, an outdoor hot-dog specialty counter. Also making its maritime debut aboard Allure of the Seas is the GUESS Accessory store from one of the world's most recognizable fashion apparel and accessories brands, as well as the first BRITTO Gallery at sea by pop culture artist Romero Britto. In addition, new technological innovations include complimentary guest service kiosks in the Royal Promenade - which guests can use to instantly view, print and email their SeaPass folio, as well as check-in for flights and print airline boarding passes - and 3-D movie screens in the ship's Amber Theater located in the Entertainment Place neighborhood.

The official naming ceremony for Allure of the Seas will take place on November 28 during a one-night celebration to benefit the United Way chapters of Miami-Dade and Broward counties, among other charities. A special four-night sailing on December 1 will call at the cruise line's private beach destination of Labadee, along the north coast of Haiti, and Allure of the Seas' inaugural seven-night Western Caribbean itinerary will depart on December 5.

Mission Accomplished: Allure Clears Denmark's Storebaelt Bridge
Allure of the Seas is one step closer to her arrival in Fort Lauderdale, Florida as she passes Denmark's Storebaelt Bridge with very little clearance to spare. Learn about the physics behind what helps the cruise ship make it under the landmark with such a tight fit.

Election Casualites for the Marine Industry

The voters have spoken. In throwing out Democrats and putting Republicans in charge of the House, they expressed dissatisfaction over the stalled economy, government intrusion into health care and the general direction of the country.

So what does it all mean for maritime interests in Washington?

We're still trying to sort it all out, but one thing is clear: There will be many changes, and lots of new faces.

Many friends of the maritime community got booted out of office. Perhaps the biggest loss will be Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., a 36-year veteran of Congress who was chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. He was a close ally and big supporter of the inland barge industry, and last year received their top legislative award.

Oberstar was also a big recipient of barge industry campaign dollars, and became their "go-to" guy on important legislative issues. He helped when there were problems with TWIC, he prodded federal officials to release proposed rules on towing vessel inspection, and he worked to improve the delivery of mariner credentials from the National Maritime Center.

1st Annual Angel of the Delta Festival benefits Fishermen affected by BP Oil Spill

Courtesy: Danny O'Flaherty

On Sunday, November 14th from 11 am - 5 pm, the Madisonville Riverfront will play host to the first "Angel of the Delta" festival. This free festival will include music, dancers, food vendors and boat demonstrations by a variety of vessels, all representative of the diversity of nationalities aided by Margaret. Donation boxes will be available to patrons for monetary donations and non-perishable food items. All donations will...be distributed to the fishing families through the United Commercial Fishermen's Association.

Music will fill the air with the sounds of Irish Music by Danny O'Flaherty, Julian Murray, and the Crescent City Celtic Band. German music from Julie Council & the German Jubilee Band, Tropical Folk from Danny Taddai, Jazz with Silver and Gold (Gypsy Elise and Ryan Way) and Environmental Folk with Sassafrass will also be heard throughout the day. You will also be treated to some spectacular dance by the Muggivan School of Irish Dance and the McTeggert Irish Dancers.

In addition, after the festival, Danny O'Flaherty, Joni Muggivan, Noel Reid and the New Basin Canal Comhaltas will host a Ceili (Irish for "Fais do-do") and concert in the Madisonville Town Hall. Tickets for the Ceili and Concert are $10 and all proceeds from the concert will also be distributed to the fishing families.

Take a stroll along the river and enjoy the nautical demonstrations that will be featured all day on the Tchefuncte River from pirogues, Irish currachs with fourteen rowers directly from Ireland, rowing shells and canoes. "Annie", a 32' wooden York Boat, the Old Man River Project vessel, will also grace the banks of the Tchefuncte River and you will have an opportunity to see her up close.

The Angel of the Delta Festival is named in honor of the late Margaret Gaffney Haughery who dedicated her entire life to feed, clothe and house orphans in New Orleans. Margaret, an orphan turned entrepreneur, left over half a million dollars in 1882, to orphans and poor of every race and nationality. This festival is the brainchild of musician/folk singer, Danny O'Flaherty and Marylee Orr, Director of LEAN (Louisiana Environmental Action Network) & LMRK (Lower Mississippi Riverkeeper), who are working in conjunction with the city of Madisonville and St. Tammany Parish, to aid the families and children of the fisherfolk still struggling from the Gulf Oil Disaster.

The Angel of the Delta Festival Committee members strongly believe in building community relations and allowing everyone to have the opportunity to experience and participate in the rich history and traditions of the gulf region. The Angel of the Delta Festival is a festival of giving, to bring together people from all walks of life to follow in Margaret's footsteps and give as she gave ~ with no concern for race, nationality or religion!
