Teekay Shipping Show Solidarity with Seafarers

Sailors' Society Donation Honours IMO Year of the Seafarer

Teekay Shipping is leading the way in the Sailors' Society's fundraising initiative to honour the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Year of the Seafarer campaign.

The IMO campaign aims to raise awareness and offer greater support to the world's invisible workforce of seafarers and the Sailors' Society is embracing this by asking organisations and individuals to donate £1 for every one of the 375,000 seafarers they aim to reach in 2010.

Teekay Shipping have contributed £14,000 ($20,000) to this fundraising drive, each pound of their donation representing 14,000 of the seafarers who will be given a helping hand with practical and spiritual support by the charity's Port Chaplains this year.

John Adams, Managing Director of Teekay Shipping (Glasgow) Ltd., said:
"We appreciate our seafarers every day of every year, but in 2010, to celebrate the Year of the Seafarer, we will pay a special tribute to the men and women who make up an integral part of our company. As part of this, we want to recognise the role our seafarers play in Teekay's success but also recognise the risks and sacrifices each makes in his or her choice to have a career at sea, and the families that support them.

"We are also delighted to acknowledge the Year of the Seafarer through our support of the Sailors' Society. This complements a series of activities we will be undertaking in recognition of this initiative. Our people are our most important assets and we are pleased to be able to make a gesture to the industry globally in support of all Seafarers."
Jan Webber, Sailors' Society Director of Fundraising & Marketing, said, "We are extremely grateful to Teekay Shipping for their generous support which will enable us to continue our work assisting seafarers in need."

The funds raised will allow the Sailors' Society to continue their vital work in ports where there are few or no services, and also provide a way for everyone to show their solidarity with hard working seafarers.

41 Filipino Seafarers Stranded in Ukraine get Assistance

BY LLANESCA T. PANTI Reporter

At least 41 Filipino seafarers have been stranded at Kiev International Airport in Ukraine because of the volcanic eruption in Iceland that has affected air traffic in parts of Europe.

The Department of Foreign Affairs reported on Monday that the Filipino seafarers stranded in Ukraine will be assisted by Philippine Embassy personnel in Moscow, Russia.

"The [Foreign Affairs] department has already tasked the Philippine Embassy in Moscow to assist the seafarers," the department said.

The Ukraine branch of Bibby Ship Management was able to send money to 27 of the Filipino seamen who were stranded in the Transit Area of the airport.

The 41 Filipino sailors, according to the Foreign Affairs department, left Manila in three batches and were supposed to join Marine Vessel Thomson Dream in Palermo, Italy on April 16 and 18. Their flight was supposed to come from Amsterdam.

Meanwhile, 12 stranded Filipinos who were reportedly discriminated against at Frankfurt International Airport are now in the United Kingdom. They were assisted by the Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt.

"Consulate officials immediately coordinated with the headquarters of the German Federal Police in Potsdam after it was alerted by the Department of Foreign Affairs about the stranded Filipino travelers at Frankfurt International Airport. The Filipino travelers were then issued transit visas so they could fly to London," the Foreign Affairs department said.

An online news report said on Saturday that the 12 Filipinos, who are all holders of UK visas, were supposed to go to London. Their flight, however, was rerouted to Frankfurt because of the volcanic eruption in Iceland on Wednesday. The same online news report stated that German authorities refused to issue temporary three-day Schengen visas to the Filipinos, but issued the said visas to other Asian passengers from China and Taiwan.

Filipinos safe in Iceland

The Foreign Affairs department also reported that at least 1,390 Filipinos in Iceland are safe from the volcanic eruption, which continues to affect air travel in parts of Europe.
n her report to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Philippine Ambassador to Norway Elizabeth Buensuceso disclosed that Filipinos living and working in Iceland reside far from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which is in southern Iceland.

In a text message sent on Monday, Foreign Affairs department spokesman J. Eduardo Malaya said that they have mobilized Philippine embassies and consulates general in Europe to assist Filipinos stranded in various airports. The department's Office for Migrant Workers Affairs is also closely monitoring the situation and directing concerned embassies to extend assistance to Filipinos stranded within their specific areas.

The April 14 eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland resulted in a massive cloud of volcanic dust being thrown thousands of feet into the air that has spread from the United Kingdom to continental Europe. Iceland is located in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Most celebrated the Easter weekend with Easter egg hunts and ham lunches, but on April 3 it was all about motorcycles at the 15th annual B.J. Stelly Memorial Bike Blessing in Port Arthur.

Father Sinclair Oubre, pastor of St. John the Evangelist, Port Arthur, and director of the Apostleship of the Sea for the Diocese of Beaumont, blessed 466 motorcycles lined up in front of the Seafarer Center in Port Arthur.

Father Oubre said the blessing was an opportunity to ask God to give protection to all of those who are getting back on their bikes at the start of the motorcycle season.

The bike blessing is sponsored by the Port Arthur International Seafarers' Center, and all proceeds from the event went to the center.

Bail for Crew Accused of Reef Harm

16 April 2010
Simon Crase

TWO Chinese men charged with offences related to damaging the Great Barrier Reef have been granted bail.

Shen Neng 1 master Wang Jichang , 47, and chief officer-on-watch Wang Xuegang, 44, appeared in the Gladstone Magistrates court at 11am yesterday before Magistrate Damian Carroll.

Commonwealth Crown Prosecutor Clive Porritt did not oppose bail for the defendants, but did ask special conditions for Xuegang be imposed due to the serious nature of the charge.

Mr Carroll read out the charges and these were conveyed to the men via a Chinese interpreter.

Jichang was charged with liability for a vessel which caused damage in the marine park and carries a maximum $55,000 fine for the offence if he is found guilty.

The more serious charge has been levelled at Xuegang, charged with being the person in charge of a vessel which caused damage within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

This carries a three-year maximum jail penalty and a $220,000 fine.

"I don't see it necessary in the circumstances to restrict him to Australia," Mr Carroll said.

Jichang is now allowed to return to his homeland, while his alleged partner-in-crime Xuegang must reside on the Shen Neng 1 until a permanent bail condition is reached at a later stage.

"The prosecution will be seeking a substantial security or bond in the future," Mr Porritt said.

The Shen Neng 1 ran aground on April 3 and was refloated on Monday. Subsequent investigations by divers revealed a 3km scar on the Douglas Shoal coral.

The two men were arrested on Wednesday after a warrant was executed by Australian Federal Police.

Barrister Tony Glynn, instructed by Thynne and Macartney, told the court both men had been lifelong seamen and neither had prior convictions.

Jichang and Xuegang were transported from the Gladstone Police Station by local Mission to Seafarers officers to their destination after court.

The Mission to Seafarers chaplain Trevor Phillips said the organisation was concerned for the welfare of all seafarers.

"We're here to make sure the seafarers get treated fairly and justly," Mr Phillips said.

The matter will be heard at 2pm on June 9. Neither man is required to appear at the next mention.
