Starting Fresh

I'm not a believer in waiting to start new things at the beginning of the year, but, here we are and it is the beginning of the year. So, with the new year, let's clear away all the baggage from last year. Get rid of any guilt about what you did or didn't do last year and start fresh.

Keep this in mind though, you can start fresh at any point, mid year, mid month, mid week, mid day. Its simply a mindset of letting go of what has come before, wiping the slate clean,  and starting with new resolve.

Realistic Resolutions and Expectations

Now having talked about a fresh start, we need to address the topic of making sure that your resolutions and expectations are, not only something you can achieve, but something you can achieve safely.

Known for the 20-30lb weight loss per week, The Biggest Loser has created an unrealistic and often times unsafe weight loss standard. The problem is that everyone wants that short cut to big weight loss. They change too much too soon and can't sustain it. Then, after they crash and burn, they are left regaining any weight they lost and a lower self image than when they started because of their "failure". A reasonable, sustainable maximum weight loss would be 2 pounds/week, but, think about this. How many years have you been trying to lose weight? How much have you lost over those years that you sustained? For most, if you set your goals as low as 1/2lb/week, you would still lose 26lbs/year. And you'd be able to keep it off because you took your time and were able to permanantely change behaviors and habits.

Don't let those unreal expectations crush your chances of long term success. As long as you're losing, you'll reach your desired weight.
Exercise Tips

The Push Up

Why is the push up such big deal in the exercise world? Does it really have any merit or is it just some old school favorite that should have died out?

Well, the fact is that the push up is, in fact, a very good exercise. It not only works the chest, shoulders, and triceps (as a bench press or chest press does) but It's also a very good exercise for the abdominals. Your body position is the same as if you were holding a plank or hover and it's your abs that prevent your back from swaying. And that holding/bracing action of the abdominals is how we use them in real life.

One problem with a push up is that they can be very difficult to do and that can be discouraging. However, there are ways to modify a push up so that you can do them. The greater the incline of the body, the easier the push up is. Anyone can do a push up standing leaning into a wall (wall push up). Once you master a wall push up, you can lean forward and place your hands on something counter height, the table height, chair height, foot stool height, intil you can at last do full push ups on the floor. Each progressive lowering of the upper body increases the challenge on chest, shoulders, triceps, and abdominals. You can also modify by doing them with your knees on the floor.

So, push ups should certainly make it into your routine at some point. See one of our Personal Trainers for assistance.
