Greetings!

Welcome to issue twenty of the Saco Sport & Fitness Get Fit newsletter. Please share it with your friends.
Whatta Ya Bet?

I constantly promote finding the inner, emotional reasons why losing weight is important to you. You should use those reasons to motivate you and keep you on track with working out and watching your diet.

HOWEVER... that's not to say that, if it adds additional incentive, bets or group challenges are another option. Let's face it, anything that boosts your commitment is a good thing.

A friend just lost a fair amount of weight when he bet a colleague that he could lose more weight in a given time frame. My family pooled money together, biggest loser take all. There's actually a website company called Stickk that allows you to put your money where your mouth is and create contracts with yourself to lose weight, stop smoking, run a marathon, etc.

Saco Sport & Fitness will soon be coming out with a challenge for members that like competition with others. Look for details in the near future. (if you would like to suggest a particular type event, I would be glad to hear from you)

Exercise Tips

Exercise videos/DVDs and P90X

Some exercise videos are great. They have great information, exercises, and progressions. They serve a wonderful purpose, helping people who can't or don't want to go to a health club get exercise in. I've always wanted to make one myself (and now, with new video technology making it easier and less costly, I still may). The newest, big hype product is P90X. It's a high intensity, varied program with an eating plan. From what I've seen and heard, it's based on good science and is a reasonably solid program that can get great results.

Here's the catch with any video program. There is no medical health history taken. It doesn't know that you have shoulder issue that causes you pain. There is no adaptation for exercises that you can't do. There's no coaching, support, cheering, checking your form, problem solving, or accountability with them. Who are they good for? Highly motivated, overall healthy individuals, with good body awareness may do really well with them, but if that's not you, you may injure yourself, make an existing condition worse, or just waste your money.

Ask one of our Personal Trainers about getting a program that is specifically created for you and your needs.

Saco Sport & Fitness Book Club

We often find ourselves in discussions with members about what books they're reading and which ones they'd recommend. Several members suggested that we start a book club. The problem was always what day and/or time would allow most people an opportunity to participate. I think we have the solution.

In this day and age of social media (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) I thought that an online club would be the answer. Now we have a Facebook Group Book Club that you can join. You do have to sign up for Facebook (I'd be happy to help you with that.) Please join in and share your book favorites with others.

Zesty Broccoli Casserole

Regular breadcrumbs can be used in place of the panko. If the broccoli florets are very large, cut them into bite-sized pieces.

Yield: 10 servings (serving size: about 3/4 cup)

Ingredients:
3  (10-ounce) packages frozen broccoli florets, thawed
Cooking spray
1 1/2  cups  fat-free milk
2 1/2  tablespoons  all-purpose flour
1/2  teaspoon  salt
1/4  teaspoon  freshly ground black pepper
3/4  cup  (3 ounces) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1/2  cup  (4 ounces) fat-free cream cheese, softened
1  cup  fat-free mayonnaise
3/4  cup  chopped onion (about 1/2 medium)
1  (8-ounce) can water chestnuts, rinsed, drained, and sliced
3/4  cup  panko (Japanese breadcrumbs)
2  teaspoons  butter, melted

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 375°.
Arrange broccoli in an even layer in an 11 x 7-inch baking dish coated with cooking spray; set aside.
Combine milk, flour, salt, and pepper in a large saucepan over medium-high heat; bring to a boil. Cook 1 minute or until thick, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Add cheddar and cream cheeses; stir until smooth. Stir in mayonnaise, onion, and water chestnuts. Spoon cheese mixture evenly over broccoli.
Place panko in a small bowl. Drizzle with butter, and toss. Sprinkle breadcrumb mixture evenly over cheese mixture. Lightly spray breadcrumb layer with cooking spray. Bake at 375° for 25 minutes or until mixture begins to bubble and breadcrumbs brown.
