Trick or Feast

Halloween is over and the holiday eat-a-thon has begun. You know it. People often write off their diet until New Year's Day. Well that's two months. Pretty hard to not gain weight unless you stay focused. AND...it's going to be much easier to stay focused if you think about it in smaller chunks of time.

Forget worrying about the season. We have a little over three weeks until Thanksgiving. Doesn't thinking just about the just next three weeks make it seem a little more manageable?

A challenge to you: can you take the next three weeks and plan to eat just a little better? Can you exercise just a little more? I'm betting that if you start by weighing yourself today or tomorrow and write down your commitment for just the next three weeks, you will start a holiday weight loss pattern that you will be able continue throughout the season. (Note how I keep saying just three weeks. It's not that long and you can stay focused for that short a time period.)

So, are you up to the challenge? Team up with friends and family to make it easier and more fun.

Let me know how you do.

Letters to the Editor

This was more of a question to the editor. The question was,  "With the increase in cases of H1N1, is anything is going to be different at the fitness center?"  - Priscilla Farrell

We have already been providing hand sanitizer stations as well as equipment cleaning solutions around the club. So the best thing that we can do at this point is to remind members of the precautions they can take to stay healthy this cold and flu season.

Wash Your Hands
Wash you hands often with soap and warm water. Hand sanitizers are also effective.

Wipe Equipment Down
Use the sanitizer spray and paper towels to clean equipment before and after use.

Cough or Sneeze Into a Tissue or Your Elbow
Avoid coughing or sneezing into your hands where illness-causing germs are more likely to spread through touch.

Stay Home if You Have a Fever
When you have a fever, your body is already working overtime to fight the illness. Stressing your system more by working out is not in your best interest.
Please submit any letters to the editor to me, Mark Nutting, at mnutting@sacofitness.com and include your name and contact information. Your name will be disclosed in the newsletter, but not your contact info. We'd love the chance to hear from you.
Exercise Tips

Crunches vs Bracing
The days that I used to teach that you couldn't effectively train the abdominals without doing some kind of dynamic (moving) crunch or curl-up are long gone. Like all training, when you look at how we use the muscle group(s), the training should utilize them in a similar way.

Abdominal muscles are rarely used to round up or down. We predominately use them to brace/girdle, hold in and create stiffness in order to transmit force. I know...huh? i.e. if you are pushing a bureau across the floor, your feet are on the floor and your hands are on the bureau. What's doing the pushing? Well obviously your legs and arms, but, if your abs couldn't brace and hold position, you'd fold up in the middle like a rag doll and nothing would get moved. Try it out. Just push against the wall and notice what happens with your abs. This is why doing some variation of planks or hovers has become common practice.

Now that's not to say crunches don't have their place, but when training for function, working your ability to brace is a better way to go. Ask one of our Personal Trainers for more information.

Posole
Fruit DrinksPosole (poh-SOH-leh) is a thick and saucy Mexican soup that's hearty enough for a meal. Set out bowls of garnishes, chopped lettuce, radishes, onions, cheese, extra cilantro, that folks can customize their soup.

The meat develops a rich, full-bodied flavor when it's cooked to a dark brown, so be sure not to stir the pork until it releases easily from the pan.
Serve this fiery soup with warm flour tortillas.

Prep: 3 minutes; Cook: 30 minutes

Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 1 1/3 cups)

Ingredients:
Cooking spray
1  (1-pound) pork tenderloin, trimmed and cut into bite-sized pieces
2  teaspoons  salt-free Southwest chipotle seasoning blend (such as Mrs. Dash)
1  (15.5-ounce) can white hominy, undrained
1  (14.5-ounce) can Mexican-style stewed tomatoes with jalapeo peppers and spices (such as Del Monte), undrained
1  cup  water
1/4  cup  chopped fresh cilantro

Preparation:
1. Heat a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Sprinkle pork evenly with chipotle seasoning blend; coat evenly with cooking spray. Add pork to pan; cook 4 minutes or until browned. Stir in hominy, tomatoes, and 1 cup water. Bring to a boil; cover, reduce heat, and simmer 20 minutes or until pork is tender. Stir in cilantro.
