NSCA 2009 Personal Trainer of the Year
 
Boot Camp
I know, I'm doing the proverbial blowing my own horn, but I thought it was very cool and wanted to share it with you. I was in Las Vegas last week for the National Strength and Conditioning Association's (NSCA) annual conference. At the awards banquet I received the 2009 Personal Trainer of the Year award. The award is given based on years of experience, education, contributions to publications, service to the health and fitness industry and the community at large. It is a big honor for me to join some of the fitness legends that have been past winners.

What is your occupation? Registered Nurse
 
How long have you been coming to Saco Sports & Fitness?
I have been a member for a couple of years but haven't been serious about coming until January 2008.
 
What made you decide to start coming?
I have always struggled with my weight but was active enough when I was younger that it stayed in check.  As I have gotten older I continued my struggle with weight and eating healthy.   I joined gyms, went to nutritionalists, tried fad diets but each time I would get frustrated and quit or I would fall off the wagon and gain more weight.  As a healthcare professional I knew when I woke up and my bones would hurt from normal activities, like walking up my stairs, I realized it was time to do something about it.
 
Have you been able to reach your goals?
Yes, I have reached some of my original goals but have not reached my ultimate goal. So far I have lost 56lbs.
 
If yes, how did you accomplish that and did you have help and/or support.
Armed with the support from my family and God's strength I walked through the doors of Saco Sport & Fitness once more and met with a trainer, Scott Fleurant.  We sat down and came up with a program that works for me.  Scott has been a great motivator and helped me stay focused on my future goals.   
 
I now have lost weight, have more energy and feel good about myself.  I no longer say "I can't", instead I say "I can", "I will" and "I am".  
 
What are your health/fitness plans for the future?
Spend more time doing healthier things with my son and husband.  Enjoy every day that God has given me and continue to work with Scott and reach that ultimate goal.

Our Intro to...classes are a perfect stepping stone to make your way into your first full length BTS class with comfort and confidence.  These classes are a smaller taste of the full length class with extra time spent to review the moves and protocols to help you work at the right level!

Bike reservations will be taken starting July 14th for July 20 class, and July 20th for the July 26th class!  All other classes will be offered on a first come first serve basis.

HULA HOOP Workshop at Saco Sport & Fitness
Wednesday, July 29th 7:30-9pm

Learn to hoop in a custom-made, adult-size hula hoop (those little ones are just too hard to start with).  Instructor, Christine MacDonald, lost 60 lbs. getting fit with her hula hoop 3 years ago.  You will be hooping and smiling in no time!  Hoops will be available on site for you to use at the workshop with option to purchase if you get hooked and want to practice at home.
 
$15 if you pre-register, $20 for walk-ins
If you love it, sign up for the 4 week session running Wednesdays, Aug. 5-26th
$40 if you sign up by July 29th, $45 thereafter

 
Roast Chicken with Tomatillo Sauce
 
from diet.com 
 
Ingredients:
1/2 pound fresh tomatillos, husks removed and quartered
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 ounces diced green chilies
1/2 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 tsp black pepper
2 whole chicken breasts, halved, skin and fat removed
1 red bell pepper, sliced into rings

Instructions
Puree the first six ingredients. Place in a 9-inch quiche pan or pie plate, cover with microwave plastic wrap, and microwave on high for 5 minutes.
 
To cook on top of stove, place pureed ingredients in a saucepan and simmer 20 minutes.
 
Spoon the sauce over the chicken, cover, and bake in a preheated 350 °F oven for 35 to 40 minutes.
