AWDF's Executive Director

Greetings!

Women's participation in leadership, decision-making and politics remains a central issue for African women in the context of political instability, conflict and flagrant human rights abuses.

To this end, AWDF is a proud co sponsor and thematic lead for the forthcoming International Colloquium on Women's Empowerment, Leadership Development, International Peace & Security in Monrovia Liberia, 7th - 8th March, 2009. This event is being co-hosted by President Ellen Sirleaf-Johnson of Liberia and President Tarja Halonen of Finland.

Activities to be carried out by AWDF at this colloquium include launching our recent publication on "The Compendium of Key Instruments for African Women's Human Rights" with foreword written by President Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and President of Realising Rights: The Ethical Globalisation Initiative. It is our belief that this compilation of key agreements and commitments to the struggle for women's rights in Africa will serve as a useful advocacy tool for African women's right's activists.

This month's newsletter features an interview with South African activist Pregs Govender who shares her thoughts on working with the power of love and courage.

Enjoy this month's newsletter.

Sincerely,

Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi
Executive Director

NS: For those who do not know you, how will you describe yourself?

(Prudence Mabele, Executive Director of Positive Women's Network in South Africa is walking by, overhears my question and says)

PM: She's a leader, a teacher, a comrade, an activist, a mother and a daughter

PG: (laughs) That will depend on who I am introducing myself to. If I am introducing myself to a group of women from local communities who have not heard of the word feminist, I will not choose the word feminist, I will simply say I am an activist who has worked in the area of women's rights. So that by the time they get to know me and when I share with them that I am a feminist they hear it without any fears, because they see what is in me.

NS: I love your book, I even gave a copy to my Mum, (Love and Courage: A Story of Insubordination) and ...

Ghana is one of the African countries where AWDF supports a number of organisations and groups working on various women's right's issues. One of the monitoring strategies of AWDF is to conduct full and comprehensive monitoring exercises in countries where there are numerous grantees. This is to be able to get first hand information about activities funded by AWDF, assess the impact of AWDF's support to organisations over a period of time and conduct comparative analysis.

In Ghana, AWDF so far has supported over 141 organizations and groups. In February, 8 staff members of AWDF embarked on a monitoring visit to these 141 organisations and groups...Continue reading Site Visits in Ghana: A brief update
