Dear FBBI Member,
In today's environment we are all thinking of ideas that work for us in growing our business and getting the most for our dollars spent. I was recently reading something that reminded me of how simple things that don't cost any money can reap so much benefit for return guests as well as reaching new guests. Howard Thurston, a famous magician once said, "I am grateful that these people came to see me. They make it possible for me to make my living in a very agreeable way. I am going to give them the very best I can". I feel that way as a Bed & Breakfast owner. I am grateful when people come to the Inn. I enjoy the lifestyle I have because these guests come to visit. When I do the best I can when they are here, they want to return, again and again. Building relationships and making new friends along the way is part of our Bed & Breakfast lifestyle.
The key is your "smile". It starts when you answer the telephone with interest and enthusiasm. Your smile comes through in your voice on the telephone. Your voice sounds as if you are glad to hear from them. You must have a good time meeting people, if you expect them to have a good time meeting you. Your smile is a messenger of good will. A smile says, "I like you - you make me happy". I'm glad to see you. If you always make the guest or potential guest feel that he is important, you will succeed.
Sometimes it's the simple things that mean so much to others that will make the difference, especially when reservations are made over the telephone and how guests are greeted upon their arrival and departure. If you are not feeling particulary happy - smile anyway. It's contagious. Your warm greetings and welcome will pay off big in the end.
Food for Thought!

BLOGGING
Some people have expressed interest in possibly starting a blog on our FBBI website. One area of interest was for guests to be able to blog on the Association website. The other area of interest was to form a blog/forum for member inns to be able to communicate with each other, express views, ask questions when needed, or share ideas. I'd be interested in hearing from our Membership how they feel about these two possibilities. Please e mail me and let me know your thoughts.

GOING GREEN:
There are a few really easy Herbs you can grow that will add flavor to your recipes, bring joy to you for just growing them and add beauty to the surroundings. I have found that Parsley, Rosemary and Basil are 3 of the easiest herbs to grow if you plant them in the shade, You can simply plant them in a pot on your porch or outside in the shade. My plants have kept growing even in the cold weather. Parsley seems to do best in the pot on my porch. Rosemary and basil are more hardy and do well in outside flower beds.
Try it - you'll like it and the joy it brings knowing you did it yourself!
