Dear FBBI Members, The Countdown is on! In less than two weeks we will be gathering at the beautiful Chalet Suzanne in Lake Wales to learn from each other at FBBI's Annual Conference. We've themed this event "Marketing, The Keys to Success" because we truly feel that leveraging your property with appropriate marketing programs will really help you gain business in these difficult economic times. So if you haven't already booked, here's your VERY LAST reminder to go to www.florida-inns.com and register for the annual conference, September 21 - 23, 2008. We are also delighted to be celebrating the 20th year of FBBI at the annual conference... so we thought we'd share with you an excerpt about the history of FBBI taken from a recent news release.
FL Bed & Breakfast Inns Association Celebrating 20 Years
Esteemed travel writer, author and undisputed expert on all that is Florida, Herb Hiller also has another important accomplishment to his credit. In 1988 after completing the second edition of his book Guide to Small and Historic Lodgings of Florida, he realized that he knew almost all of the Innkeepers in the state, but that they did not know each other. "I felt that if they did know each other, they would love each other and that they would have things in common that could help the industry as a whole," said Hiller.
Hiller's knack for connecting people and his ability to spot trends early led him to host the first ever "Florida Innkeeping Workshop" in 1988. The event was held at the Lakeside Inn in Mount Dora, with Innkeeper Ellison Ketchum assisting with the event and many tourism leaders, travel writers and innkeepers in attendance. After the workshop a meeting was held and Inn Route, predessor of the Florida Bed & Breakfast Inns Association was formed, with Ketchum serving as the organization's first president.
Hiller is the author of Highway AIA: Florida at the Edge, and has written and edited various travel guidebooks including Fodor's Florida. He is an avid cyclist and has written extensively about ecological and heritage tourism in the state. Hiller is a faculty member of the Society of American Travel Writer's Institute and his work has appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, National Geographic Traveler and The Washington Post among many others.
Best Regards,

Green'Inn Tip of the Month
Re-usable grocery bags are all the rage today and what better way to send your guests home with a memory of their stay than with a grocery bag featuring your logo prominently? This is something that can be used as a "green" gift basket for arriving VIPs and they can be produced inexpensively... just purchase plain bags, get your logo created as an iron-on and apply them yourself, as needed! Here's a web site about making your own customized iron ons! http://h71036.www7.hp.com/hho/cache/344461-0-0-39-121.html

The last of the list of an innkeepers amazing uses for WD-40:
1) Removes all traces of duct tape. We all know we have used duct tape for a temporary fix at sometime. 2) Use it for fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch. 3) WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag. 4) Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell). 5) If you have discovered that you have washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and re-wash. Presto! Lipstick is gone! We hope you have found at least one use for WD-40, that you didn't know previously, that will help your inn keeping days easier.

THE ABC'S OF TEA
* Yes, the British did invent afternoon tea, not to be confused with high tea. That was a heavier repast with biscuits and gravy.
* There are 3 kinds of Tea: Green Tea (Least processed) Oolong (Medium processed) Black (Most processed) All have antioxidants.
* Don't put cream or milk in Green Tea; it will curdle.
* Herbal Tea is not really Tea. It's made from flowers and herbs such as chamomile,
* The first tea bags were made of silk in 1904 by a New York tea and coffee merchant, who intended to use them as samples.
