Labor Day Marketing
September is historically the hottest and usually the slowest month of the year. Make the most of the long Labor Day Weekend by promoting your Inn with special package information sent NOW to regional newspapers in your area. Get the contact information by visit the newspaper's web site and send your information to the travel or features editor. Anything NEW, INTERESTING and DIFFERENT will always get the attention of a travel editor or writer--- what about doing a Board Game Challenge between guests--- with a unique prize for the winner? What about a "working" Labor Day package, where guests get to experience what it's like to run an Inn - have them help with breakfast, make reservations - it sounds crazy, but believe it or not, people LOVE to experience what other people's lives are like. This kind of promotion is unique and fun, just what editors and writers are looking for to give you additional exposure! What kinds of events and promotions have you had success with for Labor Day? Let us know---we'd love to share your thoughts with other FBBI members.

E-Mail Newsletters
Last month we talked about blogs and today we'll talk about E-mail newsletters and how they can aid your marketing programs and help you keep in touch with all of your various markets (past guests, potential guests, local visitors bureau officials, vendors, friends, etc.). E-mail newsletters have come to replace traditional newsletters in many instances because they are less expensive to produce and can be created very easily and inexpensively using the internet. One company that has become very popular offering templates and great examples is www.constantcontact.com.

Can you produce a bi-monthly or quarterly newsletter featuring a recipe, special packages and area information. Or, are you an antiques buff? If so, share your knowledge---this "non-selling" information will keep people interested in your newsletter.

 Green'Inn Tip of the Month

A great way to demonstrate environmental stewardship and attract "green-loving" guests to your property is to create new, exciting and interactive programs that concentrate on green efforts in your own community. Packaging room nights with local programs coordinated with your area Sierra Club, county parks and recreation and other "green-friendly" organizations shows a true dedication to taking care of your local environment. Have you considered arranging kayak adventures, bird watching tours, turtle watch programs, participation in coastal clean-ups, tickets to local Eco-Festivals? All of these are great ways to incorporate green principals and appeal to a brand-new group of potential guests.

New web site under development

InsideOut Solutions of Sequim Washington is developing our new state association web site.  In the next few weeks they will be done with site development and members will be able to login and update their inns listing.  Each inn will now be able to post five photos, edit all details about their inn as well as post specials and local events.  They have develop 14 state association web sites so we know we will be getting a fantastic new design.

New insurance product for FBBI members

We Florida Bed and Breakfast owners know all-too-well how difficult  it is to find proper insurance coverage. The hurricane prone years of 2004-2005 had a dramatic adverse effect on the insurance industry and many of the companies that were writing coverage either greatly increased their premiums, reduced coverage (excluding windstorm) or cancelled policies altogether.

Our new  associate member, Herbie Wiles Insurance of St. Augustine has negotiated a solution on the behalf of the FBBI.  Working with a FLORIDA based, insurance company, Herbie Wiles offers coverage through an Innkeepers  Package  Policy designed exclusively for Bed and Breakfast  Inns.  The policy provides coverage for building contents (INCLUDING windstorm for eligible locations), general liability up to $2,000,000 as well as loss-of-rents, coverage for guest property, spoilage and fine arts.   They also offers a convenient payment plan which eliminates the need for the added expense of outside premium financing.

And to help us deal with hurricane season, included with the policy is a newly developed Online Disaster Recovery Tool, a $2,000 value - free of charge.

FBBI members automatically qualify for a 5% reduction in premium.  This reduction will more than  offset your annual membership dues.
Herbie Wiles has long been associated with the inns in the St. Augustine area and has the endorsement of the St. Augustine Historic Inn (SAHI) Association.  Agency  representatives, Wayne Howell and Ralph Klein will be on hand to answer questions at the FBBI conference on September 21-23.  If you would like to find out more information prior to the conference, email Wayne or Ralph  bbinfo@herbiewiles.com  or call  their    toll free number, 800-997-1961.

Breast Cancer Alert

Mammogram with Ultrasound Improved Detection of Cancers

By Reuters Published: May 14, 2008
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Using ultrasound in addition to mammography helped doctors spot significantly more breast cancers in high-risk women compared with mammograms alone..."Mammograms saw only half of the breast cancers that were present," said Dr. Wendie Berg of American Radiology Services at Johns Hopkins at Green Spring Station in Lutherville, Md., who did the study. "If we added ultrasound to mammography, we saw 78 percent of the cancers."Dr. Berg, whose study appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association, said most of the cancers found with ultrasound were small invasive cancers that had not spread to the lymph nodes. "These are types of cancers that we most need to be finding," she said. The study was designed to see whether ultrasound might improve the chances of finding breast cancer in high-risk women with dense breast tissue, which makes cancer harder to see on a standard mammogram, a type of X-ray. Dr. Berg and her colleagues standardized the scanning technique and interpretation criteria for the ultrasound examination. They studied 2,809 women 25 or older from April 2004 to February 2006 at 21 sites, who underwent either a mammogram alone or a mammogram and ultrasound. Within the first year of screening, breast cancer was diagnosed in 40 women. Mammography alone found 12 cancers, and mammography with ultrasound found 20. The initial screening missed seven cancers that were found by later tests, and one cancer detected when a lump was felt....
