Dear FBBI Members,
The heat is on! It's summertime and we're just three months away from the FBBI Annual Conference, September 21 - 23, 2008! Our host Inn is the beautiful Chalet Suzanne in Lake Wales- and it's FBBI's 20th Anniversary! Our organization was founded in 1988, so we're planning to celebrate all of the accomplishments of FBBI at our annual event in September. But, that isn't why you should attend- you need to attend to build your "Marketing Muscle." This conference is packed with a wide variety of powerhouse presentations that will help you market your business in the changing dynamics of the world today. Visit the web site now (www.florida-inns.com) to register!
This month we wanted to explain the topic of blogging and give you some examples of blogs- blogging is another great marketing device for your property if you're comfortable talking (and typing) about yourself and if you have a knack for writing witty prose. The best description that we can provide of a blog is "a frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts, photos and web links."
Many blogs are written by people who are really "into" something: See the following examples.
http://www.gardeningblog.net/
Now, here are some innkeepers that are already doing it:
http://heritagehousebb.typepad.com/
http://camdenmaine.blogspot.com/
http://www.campbellhousebnb.com/blog/
The great thing about a blog is that is helps you connect on a personal level to the readers of the blog. That is what makes them so popular. There is a human element that appeals to people and specifically, guests who have stayed with you or are considering staying with you. You can log the trials and tribulations of growing a vegetable garden, or you can talk about any renovations of the Inn that have taken place or any special antiques you feature. The ideas are endless! It can be whatever is on your mind that day.
Blogs are FREE to set up via www.blogger.com and www.thoughts.com. You also can work with your web designer or hosting company to prominently feature your blog on your Inn's web site. If your writing is witty and you provide useful information, you'll find that people interested in you and your Inn will start to visit your blog just to get updated on what you're doing- or they may even "subscribe" to your blog, which means they will get an e-mail each time you update your blog so they can read the latest entry that you have written. Next month we'll speak about e-mail newsletters and give you some ideas and samples of how to create great, attention-getting newsletters that keep you "top-of-mind" with your guests.
Warm regards,
Pattie Detwiler President The Quilters Inn

Green'Inn Tip of the Month
Eating local is a phenomenon that is getting a lot of attention these days. Instead of having food shipped in, many people are joining organic co-ops or visiting their local farmer's market to get vegetables, fruits, meats, etc. If your community has an organic co-op you may want to get in touch with them to see where you can get supplies like eggs and other products needed for the meals served at your Inn locally. This is just another way to engage your guests during their visit. To find out if you have an organic co-op in your area visit http://www.greenpeople.org/healthfood.htm and scroll to the Florida area.

*COMING SOON - NEW WEB SITE FOR FBBI* In the near future our Member Inns will be contacted by Insideout Solutions regarding the New Web Site and how it will benefit each Member Inn. We are so excited about the versatility and ease this new site will give to our Member Inns when it comes to managing Member Inn content.
Features offered to Member Inns: Each Member's Page includes: Up to 10 color photos of their Inn, details about the inn and amenities, current specials offered and a reservation request form. Each page will be printer friendly to print on a standard sheet of paper.
Member pages will be fully editable and members can update all information about themselves or the inn's photos whenever they like. Photos are automatically re-sized, which makes changing photos easy even for novice computer users. Member details from the website are stored in an Excel Spreadsheet that can be exported at any time for almost any use. Members are able to link out to any availability calendar service. Statistics on how many times each page was visited and how often their members own Website link was utilized. Member Inns will receive on the first of every month an email with their statistics.
Each member page ends with .html so Google.com and other search engines will easily index the Website and rank it higher. A Google Map will show each inn's location in their community. For each individual inn's page, member inns can manipulate their own page title and meta tags.
Six different routes are set up to get to an innkeepers page and this helps with search engines indexing a website. For a fee, you will be able to be placed on an additional City Page, or add additional photos to our listing or be added to our new Wedding Section.
This is only a sneak preview of what the new website is going to do for you. We hope to have this up and running by the end of August and Insideout Solutions will be at the September Conference to help you further understand how interactive and useful this new website will be for our marketing efforts on behalf of our Member Inns.
I look forward to seeing all of our Member Inns at this years Conference. We are so excited about the Speakers and what this can do for your review in 2008 and 2009.

Breast Cancer Alert
Mammogram with Ultrasound Improved Detection of Cancers
By Reuters Published: May 14, 2008
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Using ultrasound in addition to mammography helped doctors spot significantly more breast cancers in high-risk women compared with mammograms alone..."Mammograms saw only half of the breast cancers that were present," said Dr. Wendie Berg of American Radiology Services at Johns Hopkins at Green Spring Station in Lutherville, Md., who did the study. "If we added ultrasound to mammography, we saw 78 percent of the cancers."Dr. Berg, whose study appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association, said most of the cancers found with ultrasound were small invasive cancers that had not spread to the lymph nodes. "These are types of cancers that we most need to be finding," she said. The study was designed to see whether ultrasound might improve the chances of finding breast cancer in high-risk women with dense breast tissue, which makes cancer harder to see on a standard mammogram, a type of X-ray. Dr. Berg and her colleagues standardized the scanning technique and interpretation criteria for the ultrasound examination. They studied 2,809 women 25 or older from April 2004 to February 2006 at 21 sites, who underwent either a mammogram alone or a mammogram and ultrasound. Within the first year of screening, breast cancer was diagnosed in 40 women. Mammography alone found 12 cancers, and mammography with ultrasound found 20. The initial screening missed seven cancers that were found by later tests, and one cancer detected when a lump was felt....
