What Can I Do?
For green grass with less work, try raising your lawn mower blade to at least 3 inches. Taller grass promotes deeper roots, shades the root system, deters weed germination, and holds soil moisture better than a closely cropped lawn. More info...

Bay Fact
After the War of 1812 began, private shipowners in Baltimore received permission to capture British merchant ships. Fort McHenry was strengthened to defend against an expected British attack from the Chesapeake Bay, and a huge new flag was ordered to fly over the fort. That 30' by 42' flag is the one that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the words of our national anthem on the morning of September 14, 1814. More details...

Now is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities in Maryland. June brings the first official day of summer and is recognized as America's Great Outdoors Month. In Maryland we have special celebrations of Maryland Outdoors Days from June 9-23, and the national launch of the 200th anniversary (Bicentennial) of the War of 1812. Fort McHenry and other Maryland sites played important roles in the War of 1812, and events of that war will be featured at locations all over the state, including the Star-Spangled Sailabration in Baltimore from June 13-19.
Whether you spend the day exploring historical sites or taking in the majestic views of the Blue Angels and tall ships in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, there are many free outdoor activities this month.
I hope you will make a habit this summer of finding time with your family and friends to enjoy the many outdoors opportunities that our great state of Maryland has to offer. We are fortunate to have so many activities so close to home, including the excitement of the Chesapeake Bay and our beautiful waterways, fresh produce, our parks and forests, and many other choices for outdoor recreation. Sharing new outdoor experiences with our loved ones helps to bring families closer and creates memories that can last a lifetime.
Enjoy your summer safely, and have a wonderful time!

BayStat Update
Much of our effort to restore the Bay has focused on reversing damage that has already been done, or changing the way we do things (like treating sewage) to reduce the damage those activities cause. However, the sheer volume of new activity resulting from population growth could cause increases that cancel out the gains we have made. At its May meeting, the BayStat team considered possible ways to offset the impacts of growth to make sure Maryland will be able to meet the caps on future pollution to the Bay.
