Clean Marina flag.

If you need to go to the bathroom while at the beach or on a boat, use a proper sanitary facility to avoid polluting the land or water. If your boat has a holding tank, be sure to empty it at a Clean Marina or other approved pumpout location. More clean boating tips...

There are approximately 200,000 boats in Maryland.

Bay Fact

Almost 200,000 motorized vessels were registered in Maryland last year. Some of those boats stay in lakes or streams, but if even half of them are out on the Bay along with boats registered in other states, it's a wonder it doesn't seem really crowded on the water!

From the desk of...

Martin O'Malley, Governor of Maryland

Governor O'Malley and others at the 2011 Bill Signing.

Governor O'Malley explains to a young citizen the significance of the bills being signed into law at the 2011 Bill Signing Ceremonies.

Last month, Senate President Miller, Speaker Busch and I signed into law several bills passed by the General Assembly that improve enforcement of fishing laws and increase penalties to deter those who would take oysters, striped bass or crabs illegally. Poaching hurts both honest watermen and our fishery resources, and I hope these new laws will help put an end to poaching.

We also signed two new laws that streamline permitting and expand oyster aquaculture by allowing leasing of barren areas within oyster sanctuaries. These new laws will increase opportunities for jobs and small businesses, and increase the number of oysters that filter the waters of the Bay.

A bill limiting the user of lawn fertilizer will reduce the excess nitrogen and phosphorus that wash into the Bay from yards and grassy areas. Other Bay states are considering similar legislation, and we hope they will join our effort to protect one of our greatest natural resources.

We also remain committed to providing our children with a more sustainable future. Two other legislative issues - the Maryland Offshore Wind Energy Act and our proposal to rethink the use of septic systems in new housing developments - are still being discussed, and we hope that discussions in the next few months will help our legislators decide how to best move forward.

Whether you enjoy boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, or some other activity, I hope you and your family will enjoy the variety and richness of Maryland's outdoor opportunities as we enter into the early weeks of summer.

Sincerely,

Governor Martin O'Malley's signature

Maryland Offers Beach Advisories

Local health departments monitor water quality at 204 designated swimming beaches in Maryland. When harmful bacteria reach high levels at a beach, swimmers are warned to avoid that beach until conditions improve. The Maryland Department of the Environment now offers a new website and notification system for beach advisories that includes daily rainfall updates. More details...

Governor O'Malley Signs New Natural Resources Laws
Governor Martin O'Malley signed into law legislation to protect Maryland's fisheries and encourage shellfish aquaculture. Supported by scientists, watermen, fishing and environmental organizations, the new laws are designed to deter harmful fishing activity by increasing penalties for oyster, blue crab, and striped bass poachers; authorizing Natural Resources Police officers to inspect commercial fishing businesses' storage areas; and streamlining penalty imposition processes. DNR increases commercial crab opportunities.

DNR Increases Commercial Crab Opportunities
Because the blue crab population is well above the restoration target for the third year in a row, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is conservatively increasing the commercial crab daily catch limits for female crabs this fall. The small increases will ease the pressures on watermen, and will have no negative impact on rebuilding the blue crab population. Details...
