Green your home using some easy tips.
Green Your Home
Many people are making easy changes in their homes to save money, energy, water and waste. Some of the changes can improve indoor air quality, too. EPA has compiled many of the most popular home greening tips in one place on the Green Homes website. Check it out...
Sprawl development causes problems for the Bay.
Bay Fact
Sprawl development causes major problems for the Bay. Between 1982 and 1997, the Bay watershed lost over 750,000 acres of forestland to development - a rate of about 100 acres per day. Between 1990 and 2000 the amount of impervious (paved) area increased by about 41 percent while the population increased by just 10 percent. When rainwater cannot soak into the ground it carries pollution with it into rivers and streams that end in the Bay. More details...

Governor O'Malley at an Earth Day tree planting.
Governor Martin O'Malley and Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold planting a tree on Earth Day.

There is no better time to plant a tree than today.

Will you join your neighbors to help us meet our goal and plant a tree today?

Fall is an ideal time to plant a tree for the future - giving newly planted trees the chance to firmly take root throughout the winter, making them stronger and more resilient come spring.

To make it easy for everyone to plant a tree, we're offering $25 coupons for the purchase of native trees costing $50 or more at more than 80 participating nurseries. And now everyone in Maryland has the opportunity to join in, TREE-Mendous Maryland can plant one for you as a Gift of Trees.

We all know that planting trees benefits us all by creating a greener, more beautiful environment. But planting a tree also has the added benefits of improving the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink, helping to keep stormwater from carrying pollution to the Bay, and storing greenhouse gases that otherwise would accelerate climate change. Those benefits only grow larger over time with our trees, and multiply as we plant more and more trees across our great state.

Finally, please don't forget to register your newly planted tree using our interactive website, where you can calculate the environmental benefits of your new tree. Our Department of Natural Resources will be holding drawings every month where you can win a gift card at a Maryland nursery, a locally-grown Christmas tree, or a yacht tour of the Chesapeake Bay.

There is no better time to plant a tree than right now. By planting one tree, you and your family can help keep Maryland Smart, Green & Growing.

Sincerely,
Governor Martin O'Malley's signature

MDE Chart shows increase in water pollution enforcement.
MDE Reports 52% Increase in Water Pollution Enforcement
The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) increased its water pollution enforcement actions 52% from fiscal years 2007 to 2010. The increased enforcement improves the water that flows to the Bay from rivers and streams, and ensures a level playing field for individuals and businesses that don't violate water pollution rules. The agency's annual enforcement report documents the improved enforcement. For more information...

State offers help for oyste aquacutlure.State Offers Help for Oyster Aquaculture
Governor Martin O'Malley has announced availability of affordable financing for watermen and others to launch or expand commercial shellfish aquaculture operations in Maryland. The financing will help them use new opportunities created by the State's new Oyster Restoration and Aquaculture Development Plan, which opens thousands of acres to leasing for aquaculture. The financing help comes through a partnership between the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Maryland Agricultural and Resource-Based Industry Development Corporation (MARBIDCO). Maryland State agencies and partners are also sponsoring a first-of-its-kind conference on November 9 and 10 to help local businesses get started or expand oyster aquaculture. Financing info... New Shoreline Erosion Management GuideNew Shoreline Erosion Management Guide
Maryland State agencies worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to produce "Chesapeake Bay Shoreline Erosion in Maryland: A Management Guide." The document identifies areas where ecological, socioeconomic, or cultural resources may be vulnerable to effects from shoreline erosion; provides information on using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools to screen and evaluate potential impacts from shoreline erosion; and includes information that may be used to support shoreline erosion project formulation. See the full report... DNR Provides Recreational Outreach to Veterans
Maryland's Department of Natural Resources has created a new recreational opportunity for veterans to ease the transition from combat back into their communities. The outreach offers a day of fishing on our beautiful Chesapeake Bay, and will expand to include other opportunities to enjoy the rich natural habitats of Maryland, including coastal waters and park lands. This is just one of the services the State provides to our returning veterans. For more information...
