A wonderful lesson on a common problem for all riders- lack of engagement from being too heavy in the bridle.  This is an essential video to remind us all to keep our horses light and reactive to the half halt.

Part 1: Ms. Haddad instructs a rider on an eight year old Hanovarian, and as they warm up she encourages the rider to work on her body position before concentrating on the horse. They ask for more activity and bounce with elevated withers. There are great tips on how the rider should use their aids to accomplish this.

Part 2: This segment begins with trot halt transitions, helping the horse to come under with the hindquarters. There is excellent advice on making sure that the horse does not lean while asking her to CatherineonWinyamaro carry.

Part 3: IN the canter, they begin with correct transitions into the git, and then canter halts to check that she carries without leaning. There are good examples o fhow the balance and transitions improve.

Part 4: With the improved balance, they move on to the flying changes, resulting in changes with more jump. They school the fours, threes and twos.

Part 5: The mare now shows the beginnings of passage by using the engagement developed earlier, with clear explanations on how to use the aids to achieve this. they work on a fluffy trot that is light and elevated.

Part 6: Ms. Haddad gives great instruction on correct aids to improve this trot. They work on half steps into trot with engagement.

This wonderful lesson shows all the basic exercises to work on with a young horse, providing a basis for all future work.  Mr. Steiner encourages a relaxed, happy session, encouraging the young mare in all her efforts while using exercises to enable her to improve her balance and push.

Part 1: Mr. Steiner works with this very young mare, asking her to begin working in a little more of an uphill balance with push from behind. He recommends more circles and serpentines than straight lines to develop the strength needed for this frame. In the trot walk transitions they keep the hind end under.

Part 3: Another new movement for the mare is the halt reinback. They keep it short and playful. They next work on the shoulder fore, rewarding the mare for her efforts.

Part 4: As the trot loses energy, they ask to move forward a bit more, and use the fifteen meter circle to help her find her balance and push. They practice the trot halt transition several times on center line. The lesson ends with a forward stretchy trot.

I love this video, so do other riders, both amateurs and professionals. Its really all about controlling the placement of the feet and shoulders and hind end, how to really achieve straighness. Jan gives you step by step instructions on how to do this. This is a video YOU MUST WATCH, no matter what your level and one of my personal favorites!
