Members and Fellow Enthusiasts,

If feels like summer is finally here...the weather has changed, kids are getting out of school and in general the feeling of change is in the air! We too have made the first of many changes! DTO has responded to feedback given by our loyal members and made it easier to find the videos you might be looking for.
  • On the Home Page, we have added a third category front and center, titled "Videos Categorized by Subject". We are still in process over the next 30 days of adding to those categories, we appreciate your patience.
  • To quickly find the newest releases, go to the "What's New" section of the home page. See example below.

What'sNewVisual

Two new videos have been released! Axel Steiner-USA with student, focusing on balance and Shannon Peters-USA, focusing on getting the shoulders up in this training session and getting the horse to push under and up rather than out with its hind legs. I personally found the following to be something I'll be thinking about in my ride tomorrow:
  • longitudinal balance gained by taking the first step out of the half halt as out and up not down, otherwise, immediately half halt again
  • think that you want the first action out of the halt to be a hind end reaction rather than a front leg reaction
  • slow the tempo in your work to find the balance and get the reach you want, once achieved, then gain the tempo and longer stride you want to give the sparkle but not at the expense of sacrificing the balance.
Don't forget.....our Buy A Dressage Horse section is viewed by approximately 15,000 unique people per month, from all over the world! You can list your horse for $36.00 per month and receive full access to our video training library along with it!

Check out membership pricing as low as $24.50 per month!

Lastly, please take a moment to check out our "Membership" tab and be sure to share this link with all of your friends and associates!

Lammert Haanstra-NED

Lammert Haanstra's long and illustrious career in the equine world began with his fascination with horses as a youngster, and his meeting Peter Rinkes, "a real horseman".  By age twenty he was working for David Buurma as a groom and rider.   He then wen on to take the instructors course at the Hippische Federatie (National Board for Equine Education-Netherlands).  He trained several local riding groups (de Tjongerruiters, de IVO-ruiters en de Waterpoorters) and was successful showing at both the local and regional level.

Lammert excelled in training horses and riders, and in his last year as an instructor candidate, Mr. Ruiterkamp asked him to become an instructor at Hippische Federatie.  His career spanned eighteen years there, and he was then asked to take charge of the daily affairs at the new FPC Friese Paarden Centrum at Drachten.

In 1999 Lammert began his own business teaching riding and driving, and giving clinics in lunging.  His business has expanded to teaching internationally, and his methods provide great preparation for keuring/sales.  He has also published "Longeren met Lammer Haanstra", an instructional text with photos of Franke Sloothaak training.

Mary Wanless
Mary Wanless- UK

Mary Wanless is an internationally renowned coach, and is the author of the 'Ride With Your Mind' books, which have been translated into many languages. She has also authored 8 DVDs. She coaches riders at all levels, from relative novices to two  of the top twelve US dressage riders, and some of the Canadian eventing squad. She has B.Sc. degrees in both Physics and Applied Sports Coaching, and holds the BHSI certificate.

30 years ago, when Mary was frustrated with her limited progress as a pupil, she set out to discover how talented riders do what they do. Her guiding question was 'What is presupposed by a trainer when she makes a specific statement to a pupil?' So when a rider is told, for instance, to 'Get the horse on the bit?' , what is the trainer presupposing? That the rider already has these skills (but somehow forgot, or just didn't bother to implement them?!) Or that she ought to be able to do it because it's easy? The reality is that most trainers teach the pupil as if they were teaching themselves. The skill of coaching lies in the coach's/trainer's ability to cross that skill-gap, and show the pupil her own personalized next steps, that will move her on from her current starting point.

Science has now proved what Mary instinctively knew all those years ago - that the world's best riders may have implicit knowledge or 'know-how', but they cannot put this knowledge into words. This is because physical skills and verbal descriptions come from different parts of the brain. The resulting dislocation between expertise and explanation makes it hard for skilled riders to 'clone' themselves - indeed, what they do and what they say they do can be poles apart. But Mary has discovered that their skills have an underlying structure, and knowing this explicitly enables her to communicate it to others. She clarifies the 'how' of riding, making its biomechanics explicit and learn able whilst avoiding the 'oughts' and 'shoulds' that stifle learning.

The result is a phenomenally effective way of helping riders develop both feel and influence. Talent really can be taught!

Alizee B & W Alizee Froment-FRA

Alizee Froment is  the French pony Chef d'Equipe and a young Grand Prix rider who competes at CDI level. Alizée was educated as a rider at the French National Equestrian Centre in Saumur, France.Since Alizée was two years old she has enjoyed working always with ponies, going for big canters on the fields, cross-country, shows, pony-games, voltige, ... Doing all just for the love of staying "free" with the horses. Riding dressage horses is her profession. Alizee: "No sooner dismounted from one horse than I am up on the next. It is the daily routine of all  professional riders". Sometimes it is essential to break that routine, says Alizee. "It is the reason why one day, when my Grand Prix horse Mistral was saddled and waiting for me,  I decided to leave the bridle aside and just puts his head-collar on. I needed to check that Mistral and I were still one. From the first tentative steps, I once more felt pleasure with blood running  through my veins, found a taste of freedom and the immense confidence I  had in him.  More than anything, what came out was an optimal concentration between us, each on the other. In my eyes, dressage is the way toward perfect understanding and absolute harmony and working in the head-collar is a further step along this path. This is why I decided to work all my horses regularly in this way from my 5-year olds to my two Grand Prix horses ".

New Video - Alizee Froment - Naxos, focused on suppleness and freedom in the shoulders, Intermediaire I

Ms. Fromment presents us with Naxos, a ten year old Lusitano moving up to I1 and I2.  In this training session she always asks for relaxation and rides with a giving hand.  There are insightful explanations of the use of aids for the I1 movements, as well as useful exercises for keeping your horse supple and listening to the leg. The zig zag half pass is worked on and she shows nicely how she first changes the flexion and then asks for the change of lead.

UlfMollerinpklaid

Dr. Ulf Moller - GER

Dr. Ulf Moller was born in 1962, and he was one of the great auction riders, producing a string of very expensive horses for the famed Hanoverian Verband auction.  Ulf was also the sales manager at the Hanoverian Auction stalbes in Verden and in 1998 he joined the highly successful private barn, the PSI dressage stables where he is currently the manager under the direction of Ulrich Kasselmann.  He has taken the PSI auction to new heights and the PSI horses are the most sought after as their auction prices reflect where recently a dressage horse sold for two million euros.

Ulf has a string of very impressive riding achievements. Riding the most impressive stallion, Sandro Hit, he won the best equine of the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses 1999. Also add to Ulf's list of accomplishments, five times Bundeschampion (German Young Horses Championship) from 1999 - 2002, World Champion with 5 year old Don Davidoff in 2000 and placed 2nd in the FEI breeding Championship for Young Dressage horses 2001 riding Placido.

New Video - Dr. Ulf Moller - Training the Five Year Old

This five year old gelding is working on his lateral work. They warm up before the start of the video, and then move straight into the trot work, making sure that the horse is in front of the rider. He points out that riding a corner is riding a quarter of a volte, and that the corners help in achieving a horse that is loose with a swinging back. They continue the rising trot, adding a couple of steps of sitting to balance the horse to prepare him for lateral work.

They finish their canter work, and then move on to the shoulder in and haunches in at the trot. There is a great discussion of the progression of teaching the young horse the bend and how it relates to later work. The haunches in work progresses until it is done straight out of the corner, giving a clear example of the importance of riding good corners.

Part three begins with an excellent explanation of what movements to work on at the same time and why. To get the horse more reactive, they do canter walk canter transitions with only a few steps of walk in between. They do canter left, walk, canter right, walk, canter left transitions on the quarterline.

The previous canter walk transition work has prepared the horse for flying changes, and these are done on the short diagonal. Dr. Moller finishes with a discussion of when to stop your training for the day.
