Enjoy your weekend! While you have some relax time, watch the latest two videos. One from Nancy Later, which is a short tutorial on the walk pirouette and the second is a session on a stunning young 4 year old stallion, who was reserve Bundeschampionate winner, during a schooling session.
What is wonderful about the 4 year session, is to see Mr. Oelrich, constantly reminding the rider to get the hind leg, to remind the rider how to use their own leg to activate their horses leg, to get the best gait possible. Also, making the rider notice when they receive the reaction they were seeking and to remind them to make the horse understand that he gave a correct response. This is the type of reality session, that sticks in our minds, which serves as our own visual and audio imprint for our own next ride.
The walk pirouette video by Nancy, is a tutorial broken down to the most finite of details. Nancy shows exactly what aids to use and discusses typical evasions and how to address them.

New Releases For May
 Nancy Later-USA
Nancy has technically been riding since the age of six months when her parents placed her in a basket saddle on the back of Chief Snooks, and entered her in a lead line class at the Devon Horse Show. Through her youth, she engaged in all sorts of equestrian disciplines, but early settled on dressage and after high school became a working student with first Lendon Gray, then Belinda Nairn and then two-time Olympian Jessica Ransehousen. Nancy is a well know trainer on the east coast and is a trainer to many trainers.
Ms. Later provides a new tutorial with concise explanations and demonstrations of the aids for the walk pirouette including problems that can arise in the movement and what to do about them. The walk pirouette video is very useful for everyone from those just training the this movement to advanced horses and riders seeking better scores.
 Oliver Oelrich-GERCurrently, Mr. Oelrich serves as the young rider team coach for the German national team. He is a master horsemen winning titles such as the National Championships and World Championships for young dressage horses, as well as with the Nuremberg Cup in which he presented to Vice-Champion in 2007. Oelrich is experienced at training young talents as well as a top champion himself. He shows extreme focus and patience in his manner and style, both towards the horses and the riders alike.
Mr. Oelrich brings us another spectacular young horse in training for the World Championships for Young Horses. This four year old stallions shows a phenomenal canter, and the opportunity to see how lovely the gaits can be from a foundation of relaxation.

 Alizee Froment-FRA
Alizee Froment is the French pony Chef d'Equipe and a young Grand Prix rider who competes at CDI level. Alizée was educated as a rider at the French National Equestrian Centre in Saumur, France.Since Alizée was two years old she has enjoyed working always with ponies, going for big canters on the fields, cross-country, shows, pony-games, voltige, ... Doing all just for the love of staying "free" with the horses. Riding dressage horses is her profession. Alizee: "No sooner dismounted from one horse than I am up on the next. It is the daily routine of all professional riders". Sometimes it is essential to break that routine, says Alizee. "It is the reason why one day, when my Grand Prix horse Mistral was saddled and waiting for me, I decided to leave the bridle aside and just puts his head-collar on. I needed to check that Mistral and I were still one. From the first tentative steps, I once more felt pleasure with blood running through my veins, found a taste of freedom and the immense confidence I had in him. More than anything, what came out was an optimal concentration between us, each on the other. In my eyes, dressage is the way toward perfect understanding and absolute harmony and working in the head-collar is a further step along this path. This is why I decided to work all my horses regularly in this way from my 5-year olds to my two Grand Prix horses ". New Video - Alizee Froment - Naxos, focused on suppleness and freedom in the shoulders, Intermediaire I Ms. Fromment presents us with Naxos, a ten year old Lusitano moving up to I1 and I2. In this training session she always asks for relaxation and rides with a giving hand. There are insightful explanations of the use of aids for the I1 movements, as well as useful exercises for keeping your horse supple and listening to the leg. The zig zag half pass is worked on and she shows nicely how she first changes the flexion and then asks for the change of lead.
 Dr. Ulf Moller - GER
Dr. Ulf Moller was born in 1962, and he was one of the great auction riders, producing a string of very expensive horses for the famed Hanoverian Verband auction. Ulf was also the sales manager at the Hanoverian Auction stalbes in Verden and in 1998 he joined the highly successful private barn, the PSI dressage stables where he is currently the manager under the direction of Ulrich Kasselmann. He has taken the PSI auction to new heights and the PSI horses are the most sought after as their auction prices reflect where recently a dressage horse sold for two million euros.
Ulf has a string of very impressive riding achievements. Riding the most impressive stallion, Sandro Hit, he won the best equine of the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses 1999. Also add to Ulf's list of accomplishments, five times Bundeschampion (German Young Horses Championship) from 1999 - 2002, World Champion with 5 year old Don Davidoff in 2000 and placed 2nd in the FEI breeding Championship for Young Dressage horses 2001 riding Placido. New Video - Dr. Ulf Moller - Training the Five Year OldThis five year old gelding is working on his lateral work. They warm up before the start of the video, and then move straight into the trot work, making sure that the horse is in front of the rider. He points out that riding a corner is riding a quarter of a volte, and that the corners help in achieving a horse that is loose with a swinging back. They continue the rising trot, adding a couple of steps of sitting to balance the horse to prepare him for lateral work. They finish their canter work, and then move on to the shoulder in and haunches in at the trot. There is a great discussion of the progression of teaching the young horse the bend and how it relates to later work. The haunches in work progresses until it is done straight out of the corner, giving a clear example of the importance of riding good corners. Part three begins with an excellent explanation of what movements to work on at the same time and why. To get the horse more reactive, they do canter walk canter transitions with only a few steps of walk in between. They do canter left, walk, canter right, walk, canter left transitions on the quarterline. The previous canter walk transition work has prepared the horse for flying changes, and these are done on the short diagonal. Dr. Moller finishes with a discussion of when to stop your training for the day.
Axel Steiner- USA
Axel started riding as a 9 year old in Germany and later attended the well known riding schools of Warendorf and von Neindorff. After moving to the USA in 1961, he competed on his own horses and on horses owned by the US Modern Pentathlon Team until his military duties interfered. He received his first national judges licence in 1968, and was promoted by the FEI to Official status (FEI-O, now FEI Five Star*****) in 1988. Axel has judged in 35 different countries, from Zambia to World Cup Finals, Pan American, and Olympic Games. After retiring from the military in 1988, he has also concentrated on teaching, and is now a much sought after clinician throughout the country.
Col (Lt/Col USAF, Ret.) is a long standing member of the USEF Dressage Committee, a judge instructor/examiner, and faculty member of the USDF "L" program. He lives with his wife, Terri Miller, the well known artist and photographer, in the San Diego, CA area.

Katrin Bettenworth, Pferdewirtschaftsmeisterin, has achieved more than 150 wins in Klasse S (Advanced) Dressage. As a German Grand Prix trainer and competitor she has taught clinics all over Europe, including Spain, Italy, Denmark and England.
Katrin has trained many horses from the lower levels to the Grand Prix including three horses that competed in the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany, 2006.

There are wonderful tips on the pirouettes, piaffe and passage. New Video- Shannon Peters-
This is a great tutorial for those working with a sensitive, forward upper level horse. Ms. Peters works on straightness, half steps, the counter canter, and the effect of the riders' position on the movement of the horse. There are useful tips in getting your horse to contain the energy created in the half steps when transitioning back to the trot.

This talented rider and combination provide a clear demonstration of the benefit of increasing the bend and flexibility in an upper level horse. Ms. Peters uses effective exercises to improve the quality of the gates and transitions and the quality of the I1 movements.

Chrissa Hoffman rides Scrabble, a five year old gelding, giving a wonderful demonstration of the correct way to warm up and check that he is through. There is an excellent discussion of the appropriate head and neck position for this horse. The warm up continues with the canter, checking that he is seeking the bit when stretching down, while still being able to bring him up to work. She requires him to rock back and carry his weight on his hindquarters. Ms. Hoffman provides a checklist of what qualities to look for during the warmup. After a thorough warm up, Ms. Hoffman asks this talented young gelding to go to work. She begins with the shoulder in and haunches in while keeping the impulsion and asking the gelding to move off her leg. The lateral work continues with the trot half-pass and medium trot. She is careful to ask and stay within the balance he is able to carry. There is a good explanation of how progress with his training. This tutorial begins with the expectation that the horse is responsive to the aids. When the basics are correct, they move on to the shoulder in to activate the inside hind leg in the canter. In the haunches in, the canter half-pass and the counter canter she checks to make sure he carries himself at a level appropriate to his age and training. They also play with the beginning stages of the canter pirouettes. This session ends with lovely stretching at the trot because the work before was correct. Even though the work session is through, she doesn't allow him to rush at the walk. This is a great tutorial on what work is appropriate for a five year old.
(video shown at reduced size) New Video- Alizee Froment Rides Bitless on Mistral du Coussoul Alizee Froment presents Mistral du Coussoul, a Lusitano stallion, in a demonstration of bitless dressage. She begins by working on his suppleness with a low head carriage to free his back, always checking that he is moving off her leg. The shoulder-in, leg yield, and half-pass are performed at the walk and then the trot. The stallion shows excellent stretching without shortening his stride. The four loop serpentine is used to equally use both sides of the horse. In the canter they work the twenty meter circle, closing it in and expanding it out, showing lovely, flowing canter trot transitions. This segment begins with the canter and counter canter with the proper placement of the withers. Alizee explains the advantage of more short walk breaks over a single long walk break. They show a wonderful example of the half-pass at the canter, always giving with the hand. She also explains her use of lateral work. Alizee works on the medium to collected canter transitions, always giving with her hands. This progresses to working canter pirouettes. She gives a great explanation for her plan for the entire work session. When Mistral becomes playful, she uses the small circle and the shoulder in on four tracks to put him back to work. Alizee works again on the four tracks, and then the passage.

New Video- Axel Steiner teaches student on young horse on getting the canter off the forehand and how to gain self carriageMr. Steiner begins the work with DTO's own, Chrissa Hoffman of CFH Dressage, out of Ocala, FL, with the shoulder in and asks for more activity in the hind legs from this young horse. There is an excellent explanation of what walk is appropriate for the level of the horse and why. The pair continues their work in the canter, showing soft half-passes at the canter as well as counter-canter and they develop a better connection through these exercises. They test their connection by riding canter trot canter transitions while asking the horse to keep his carriage. This session shows a great example of the benefits of a turn on the haunches as a training tool. They then continue to the canter, counter-canter and the flying change. After asking for a canter that is more up, Mr. Steiner asks for the trot transition maintaining the elevation requiring the horse to carry himself more.
