Members and Fellow Enthusiasts,
So much to share this month....WEG was phenomenal....Fuego, the PRE stallion underneath rider Juan Munoz and trainer Jan Bemelmans, of the Spanish team were out of this world. I know the Friday night Kur brought tears to my eyes, the beauty and harmony is not possible to be better...You can see Juan and Jan and Fuego training and developing over the years, here on DressageTrainingOnline.com. The DTO Blog, contains, many captured moments from WEG as well as my own shared comments on this innagural event, having taken place in on US soil for the first time ever.
We have another new permanently featured partner trainer, Jody Hartstone of New Zealand. Jody was set to represent New Zealand in the 2010 World Equestrian Games, unfortunately, upon arrival into the United States, her lovely stallion, Whisper, was not sound and a complete recovery prior to the games, was not possible. The silver lining for DTO and members of the Dressage community across the globe, is that I was fortunate enough to have the personal pleasure of spending the summer with Jody and witnessed first hand, her unique and incredibly sensible training methodology based purely on operant conditioning. For those who have a special challenge they may be experiencing with their equine partner, this just might be your ticket. It worked for me! Please view the details below regarding her biography and insight into her first set of new training videos!

New Training Videos for Your Viewing!
 Jody Hartsone-NZ
Jody, shortlisted for Athens Olympics on Landioso and the 2010 WEG qualified rider for Dressage representing New Zealand, Jody teaches and lectures worldwide emphasizing her training based on scientific principles of behavioural theory. "The rider's aids are all trained systematically and one at a time," Hartstone explained. "One should be careful not to apply two cues at once and ensure that the pressure-release aids (reins or legs) are trained effectively before one moves on to subtle aids like the seat. Basically reins are there to slow down, legs to go, reins to turn and leg for yield. Most important is to train the legs of the horse before training its frame. It is very different from what we see in many training yards where horses are sent to. With them rein pressure and reins are no longer effective to slow down the horses' leg. Paramount is self carriage. The horses are taught from breaking in to hold their own rhythm, direction and outline."
New Video-How to stop your horse from leaning on the bit. In this video Jody is riding a young horse who can be a bit heavy in the hand from leaning on the bit. You will see her work on getting the horse to stop leaning on the bit and thus come up off the forehand, and move better from thrust from behind. This is a scenario that many riders of all levels deal with and this is invaluable tool to view and easily apply to your riding, if you have a similiar scenario.
New Video-The basics use of the aids and operant conditioning. In this video Jody introduces her riding methodology, much focused on the operant conditioning methods. These methods are very simple and make complete sense, but are slightly different than what many are taught, which comes from the German school of riding. Jody takes you through understanding the leg aid, hand aid, whip aid, yield aid and shows you how to use and apply them to your basic training.
 Katrin Bettenworth-GER
Pferdewirtschaftsmeisterin, has achieved more than 150 wins in Klasse S (Advanced) Dressage. As a German Grand Prix trainer and competitor she has taught clinics all over Europe, including Spain, Italy, Denmark and England. Katrin has trained many horses from the lower levels to the Grand Prix including three horses that competed in the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany, 2006.
New Video-Ask youself...do you have the horse on your aids? Katrin thinks about this every step of the way. You can watch and see how she thinks through each footfall during the entire lesson. Working with the half pass, zig zag and pirouettes, you can understand her approach to the goal by the excercise she uses, while she explains in details the aids she is using during execution. She ends this training video with piaffe and passage work, showing the importance of the transitions.
Colonel Carde, the former director of the French National School at Saumur, Col. Carde is an FEI I judge and founder of ALLEGE-IDEAL, an international organization for promoting classically correct horses (with superb piaffe/passage transitions). Dedicated to the teaching of horsemanship, Colonel Christian Carde's first riding experiences were in the discipline of show jumping and eventing. He spent 26 years at the Cadre Noir in Saumur, where he became "ecuyer en chef" or head trainer. He has served in various capacities on the French Olympic Team, competitor, coach, and chef d'equipe over different Olympiads.
New Video-Playfullness and in hand work...watch and listen to the why and how as Colonel Carde works with horse and rider to achieve unity. Both the student and Carde ride this lovely young horse with a focus on keeping the attention, using downward transitions, ensuring we keep the frame and contact we desire, at all times. Carde emphasizes activity with the least possible contact as a key goal. This training session is applicable for riders of all levels.
Free Sample Mini-Clip Colleen Kelly-AUSColleen is one of 15 educational presenters chosen to present at the 2010 WEG, she is a biomechanics specialist, rider and judge, Colleen focuses on the science of rider physiology. She analyzes, tests and improves balance, co-ordination and timing of the rider, e.g.:assessing what is putting the horse on the forehand, testing and improvement for falling in & cutting corners, analyzing why the horse slows down for speed sports like eventing and games, improving the independent seat so the rider can give light, imperceptible aids, assess imbalances between the left and right sides, improves specific rider issues such as sitting trot, stiller legs, better hands, and knowledge of correct aids for advanced movements.New Video-Balance, confidence and returning to your horse after a long period away. She shows how to evaluate your seat while mounted, but before you ride in addition to looking at your posture, hand, head, chest position. She demonstrates what happens if you grip with your knees or do not have your foot in the proper spot within the stirup. Much focus on safety and confidence can be found within this video which is great for green riders or those recently returning to their ride as a refresher.
